Amex Membership Rewards vs HDFC Millennia 2026: Points or Cash?

For most people, HDFC Millennia puts more money back in your pocket than the Amex Membership Rewards card: its 5% online and 2.5% grocery rates beat Amex's effective 2% at normal spend levels, and it costs ₹1,000 against Amex's ₹4,500. Amex makes sense if you value points that never expire, fine-dining discounts and Amex's service, and you're disciplined about collecting its monthly bonus points.

This is less a like-for-like contest and more a choice between two philosophies: simple, capped cashback vs a flexible points currency.

These figures come from BestCard's latest card data. Both issuers update terms periodically, so verify on their sites before you apply.

How Amex's 2% is built

Amex's base earn is 1 point per ₹50 spent. At BestCard's valuation of 30 paise a point, that alone is 0.6%. The 2% effective figure assumes you also pick up the recurring monthly bonus points Amex offers for hitting a handful of qualifying transactions or a spend threshold. Miss those, and the return drops sharply.

Points don't accrue on fuel, insurance or utilities. Points can also be transferred to airline and hotel partners, where some redemptions may beat 30 paise, but that depends on availability and the partner, so we use 30 paise for a fair comparison. Our guide on calculating the real value of reward points explains the method.

Rewards maths

₹20,000 a month

Split: ₹8,000 online, ₹4,000 groceries, ₹2,000 utilities, ₹6,000 other.

HDFC Millennia

  • Online: 5% of ₹8,000 = ₹400
  • Groceries: 2.5% of ₹4,000 = ₹100
  • Utilities: 1% of ₹2,000 = ₹20
  • Other: 1% of ₹6,000 = ₹60
  • Total: ₹580 a month (₹6,960 a year)

Amex Membership Rewards, collecting monthly bonuses

  • Eligible spend (excluding utilities): ₹18,000 × 2% = ₹360
  • Utilities: ₹0
  • Total: ₹360 a month (₹4,320 a year)

Without the monthly bonuses, Amex earns 360 points (₹18,000 ÷ 50) worth ₹108 a month.

₹50,000 a month

Split: ₹20,000 online, ₹8,000 groceries, ₹8,000 dining, ₹4,000 utilities, ₹10,000 other.

HDFC Millennia: online ₹1,000 (at cap) + groceries ₹200 + dining 1% ₹80 + utilities ₹40 + other ₹100 = ₹1,420 a month (₹17,040 a year).

Amex Membership Rewards: eligible ₹46,000 × 2% = ₹920 a month (₹11,040 a year), plus up to 20% off at partner fine-dining restaurants if you eat out at those places.

The Amex gap narrows at high spend because HDFC's online cap kicks in, but Millennia still leads unless your spending is mostly in categories outside HDFC's accelerated list. For a broader look at this trade-off, see cashback vs reward points.

Fees and waivers

HDFC Millennia's ₹1,000 fee is waived at ₹1 lakh a year, and it credits 1,000 CashPoints (₹1,000) on joining.

Amex Membership Rewards costs ₹1,000 to join and ₹4,500 a year after that. BestCard's data lists ₹1.5 lakh as the waiver spend. Amex India has separately said its 50% renewal-fee waiver on ₹90,000 annual spend ends on 15 November 2026, so check how the waiver works when your renewal comes up. With 18% GST, an unwaived ₹4,500 fee costs ₹5,310.

Amex's welcome offer is 4,000 bonus points on ₹15,000 of spend within 90 days, worth ₹1,200 at 30 paise. A one-time bonus also lands at first renewal, per Amex.

Lounge and travel

Neither card is a travel card. Both charge 3.5% forex markup. HDFC Millennia gives one domestic lounge voucher per quarter after ₹1 lakh of quarterly spend (as an alternative to a ₹1,000 voucher). BestCard's data lists no lounge access for Amex Membership Rewards. If you want points for travel plus lounges, the Amex Platinum Travel is the more relevant Amex; see our Amex credit cards guide.

Acceptance and availability

This is a real practical issue. Amex acceptance in India is lower than Visa, particularly at small shops and some online gateways. HDFC Millennia on Visa works almost everywhere. Amex also issues this card only in a defined list of larger Indian cities, so check whether you're eligible before applying.

Who should pick which

Pick HDFC Millennia if:

  • You want the highest rupee return with the least effort
  • Most of your spending is online shopping and groceries
  • You want a card accepted everywhere
  • You'd rather pay ₹1,000 than ₹4,500

Pick Amex Membership Rewards if:

  • You already collect points for airline or hotel transfers
  • You'll reliably hit the monthly bonus targets
  • You eat at partner fine-dining restaurants and will use the 20% discount
  • You value non-expiring points and Amex's customer service

Verdict

HDFC Millennia wins on value for most spenders: about ₹6,960 a year at ₹20,000 a month against ₹4,320 for Amex, at a quarter of the fee. Amex Membership Rewards is a niche pick for points collectors and diners who will work the monthly bonuses and use the dining discounts. If you just want money back, take Millennia.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amex Membership Rewards better than HDFC Millennia?

What is the annual fee for Amex Membership Rewards?

BestCard's data lists a ₹1,000 joining fee and a ₹4,500 annual fee, with a fee waiver spend of ₹1.5 lakh. Amex has also said its 50% renewal-fee waiver on ₹90,000 annual spend ends on 15 November 2026, so confirm the current waiver terms.

No. Membership Rewards points don't expire, which is unusual among Indian cards. For HDFC Millennia CashPoints, check HDFC's current validity terms and redeem them regularly against your statement.

Can I use Amex everywhere in India?

Not everywhere. Amex acceptance is lower than Visa or Mastercard, especially at smaller merchants. HDFC Millennia runs on Visa and is accepted almost everywhere.
