HDFC Bank Credit Cards: Which One Fits Which Spender
24 June 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

HDFC Bank has one of the largest and most fragmented credit card lineups in India — entry-level cards, fuel and shopping cards, premium travel cards, and a couple of super-premium invite-only ones. The size of the lineup is exactly why most people end up picking the wrong card: they compare welcome offers instead of matching the card to how they actually spend.
Entry-level and everyday cards
If you're applying for your first card or want something with a low or waived annual fee, HDFC's entry-tier cards are built around simple, flat rewards on everyday categories like groceries, utility bills, and general retail. These aren't exciting cards, but that's the point — they're low-maintenance and hard to misuse. If your spending doesn't cluster heavily around any one category, this tier is usually the right starting point rather than jumping straight to a premium card you won't fully use.
Category cards: fuel, shopping, and dining
HDFC's mid-tier cards are where the real optimization happens. There are cards tuned for fuel spending with surcharge waivers, cards that accelerate rewards on specific e-commerce platforms, and cards built around dining and lifestyle spends. The rule of thumb is the same one that applies across issuers: identify your top one or two spending categories first, then pick the card that rewards those specifically — a targeted card will consistently beat a generic one within that category.

Premium and travel cards
At the top end, HDFC's premium cards bring lounge access, airline and hotel transfer partners, and higher reward multipliers, but they also carry meaningfully higher annual fees. These only make sense if you travel enough to use the lounge visits and transfer partners — otherwise you're paying for benefits that sit unused. If you're unsure, it's worth tracking your actual travel frequency for a few months before committing to this tier.
Applying and what to check
An existing HDFC savings or salary account can speed up approval significantly, since the bank already has your income and KYC on file — check the HDFC NetBanking app for pre-approved offers before applying cold. If you're applying fresh, have income proof and PAN ready, and confirm the current joining fee, renewal fee, and any spend threshold that waives it, since HDFC revises these periodically and a card that looked free at launch can carry a real fee a year in.
