ICICI Bank Expressions credit card

The ICICI Bank Expressions Credit Card is an entry-level Visa card with an unusual selling point: you get to choose how it looks, from more than 175 card-face designs across sports, travel, music, food and other themes. Underneath the artwork is a fairly standard ICICI rewards card earning 3 points per ₹100, with a handful of travel and lifestyle perks that mostly switch on only when you spend more. It's aimed at younger, new-to-credit customers who want a first card that feels personal. The design is a nice touch, but the rewards need a closer look.

Fees and eligibility at a glance

Expressions charges a ₹499 joining fee and a ₹499 annual fee, waived once you spend ₹1.5 lakh in a year. That's about ₹12,500 a month. The listed eligibility covers salaried and self-employed applicants aged 21 to 65. New cardholders get a BookMyShow voucher worth ₹500 on registering the card, which covers the first year's joining fee.

Rewards and how they actually work

The headline is 3 reward points per ₹100 on retail spend, which sounds generous until you price the points. Each point is worth about ₹0.25, so 3 points per ₹100 is roughly 0.75% back. Spend ₹20,000 a month and you earn 600 points, worth about ₹150, or ₹1,800 a year. Utility payments earn at a reduced 1 point per ₹100, about 0.25%, so this isn't a card for bills.

Redemption is free if you take the points as statement credit or as vouchers from ICICI's own reward catalogue. Some third-party gift and merchandise catalogue items carry a ₹99 plus GST fee per redemption request, so stick to statement credit or ICICI's own vouchers and the fee never applies.

Lounge, golf and insurance

The perks list looks longer than you'd expect at ₹499, but most of it is gated by spending. Domestic airport lounge access is 1 visit per quarter, for the primary cardholder only, and requires ₹75,000 of spend in the quarter. That's ₹25,000 a month, or ₹3 lakh a year, twice the fee waiver threshold. A light user will never see it. The card also lists 2 complimentary international lounge visits a year.

Golf works the same way: 1 complimentary round a month, but only after ₹50,000 of spend in the previous month. Insurance cover includes ₹2 lakh of personal accident cover and ₹20 lakh of air accident cover. There's a 1% fuel surcharge waiver on fuel purchases, and cash withdrawals cost 2.5% of the amount or ₹500, whichever is higher, plus GST.

How it compares with ICICI Coral and Amazon Pay ICICI

ICICI Coral is the closest sibling. It costs ₹500 a year with the same ₹1.5 lakh waiver, and earns a lower 0.5% base rate. Its lounge access follows the same pattern, 1 domestic visit per quarter after ₹75,000 of prior-quarter spend, but it adds 4 railway lounge visits a year, 25% off (up to ₹100) on BookMyShow or INOX tickets twice a month after ₹25,000 of quarterly spend, and milestone points: 2,000 at ₹2 lakh of annual spend, plus 1,000 for every further ₹1 lakh, up to 10,000 a year. It has no international lounge access and asks for a 700 credit score and ₹20,000 monthly income. Expressions earns more on everyday spend (0.75% against 0.5%) and adds international lounge visits, golf and air accident cover. Coral suits rail travellers and moviegoers who spend ₹2 lakh or more a year.

The Amazon Pay ICICI card is the honest benchmark for pure rewards. It's lifetime free, pays 1% cashback everywhere, and adds 5% on Amazon.in with Prime (3% without). On the same ₹20,000 a month, it earns ₹2,400 a year against Expressions' ₹1,800, with no fee to waive at all. It does ask for a ₹30,000 monthly income and has none of the lounge or golf perks. If you qualify and want maximum return, Amazon Pay wins. Expressions only earns its place if you value the design, the international lounge visits or the insurance cover.

What's genuinely good about this card

175+ card designs is genuinely unusual at the entry level. The 3 points per ₹100 base rate is better than Coral's, and points redeem as statement credit at no cost. Two international lounge visits a year, ₹20 lakh of air accident cover and a golf programme are more than most ₹499 cards offer, even if some of them need spending to unlock. The ₹500 BookMyShow voucher covers the first year's fee.

Where it falls short

At about 0.75%, the effective reward rate is below a basic 1% cashback card, and utilities earn only around 0.25%. The domestic lounge visit needs ₹75,000 a quarter and golf needs ₹50,000 the month before, levels most first-time cardholders won't reach. Points at ₹0.25 each make the "3 points" headline look better than it is. And for anyone who qualifies, a lifetime-free card like Amazon Pay ICICI simply earns more.

Who this card actually makes sense for

Expressions suits a young professional who wants a first card that reflects their personality, flies occasionally and would use the international lounge visits, and doesn't mind a slightly lower reward rate in exchange. If maximising cashback is the only goal, a flat 1% card will serve you better.
