The Credit Card Grace Period, Explained
Updated 25 February 2026
The grace period is the stretch of time you can spend on a credit card without paying any interest at all — but it comes with one strict condition that's easy to lose track of.
How long it lasts
Depending on when in the billing cycle you spend, the grace period typically runs somewhere between roughly 20 and 50 days — from the purchase date to the due date of the statement it eventually lands on.
The condition that keeps it alive
The grace period only applies if you paid your previous statement in full. Carry even a small balance forward, and the grace period disappears — new purchases start accruing interest immediately, from the transaction date, with no free window at all. Cash withdrawals on a credit card never get a grace period regardless of your payment history.
