Credit Utilization Ratio: What It Is and Why It Matters
Updated 14 July 2026
Credit utilization — how much of your available credit you're actually using — is one of the most heavily weighted factors in your credit score, and one of the easiest to control.
How it's calculated
It's your total outstanding balance divided by your total credit limit, across all cards, expressed as a percentage. A ₹30,000 balance against a ₹1,00,000 limit is 30% utilization. It's calculated both per-card and in aggregate across all your cards.
Why lenders care
High utilization signals reliance on credit rather than comfortable repayment capacity, regardless of whether you eventually pay in full. Utilization is commonly cited as one of the largest single factors in credit scoring models, second mainly to payment history.
How to keep it low
Keep aggregate utilization under roughly 30% as a general guideline, and lower is generally better. Two practical levers: pay down balances before the statement date rather than only before the due date (since it's the statement balance that typically gets reported to the bureaus), or ask for a credit limit increase on a card you already manage well, which lowers utilization without changing your spending.
