How to Dispute an Error on Your CIBIL Report
Updated 19 January 2026
Credit report errors are more common than people expect — a payment misreported as late, a closed account still shown as open, occasionally an account that isn't yours at all. They're disputable, and it's usually free.
Where the dispute actually goes
You can raise a dispute directly with CIBIL through their online dispute resolution portal, or with the specific bank/lender that reported the incorrect data — the lender is who investigates and corrects it, CIBIL just forwards the dispute and updates the record once resolved.
What to have ready
Identify the exact account and entry you're disputing, and gather anything that supports your claim — payment receipts, closure letters, statements showing the correct balance. Vague disputes take longer and are more likely to be rejected.
Timeline and follow-up
Disputes are typically required to be resolved within 30 days. If the lender doesn't respond or the correction doesn't reflect after that window, you can escalate to the lender's internal ombudsman or the RBI's banking ombudsman scheme. Re-check your report after the resolution window to confirm the correction actually landed — it doesn't always happen automatically on the first attempt.
