How to Read Your Credit Card Statement

Updated 7 March 2026

A credit card statement packs a lot onto one page. Four numbers matter more than the rest, and knowing where to find them takes the guesswork out of paying on time and in full.

The four numbers that matter

Statement date (when the cycle closed and this bill was generated), total amount due (what clears the balance in full, interest-free, if paid by the due date), minimum amount due (the floor to stay in good standing — see our guide on why paying only this is expensive), and due date (the hard deadline before interest and late fees apply).

The rest of the statement

Below those headline numbers you'll typically find: a transaction list with merchant names and dates, reward points earned and redeemed that cycle, any EMI conversions with their remaining installments, and a summary of fees and interest charged, if any. Checking the transaction list every cycle — not just the total — is the simplest fraud check available to you.
