Joining Fee vs Processing Fee: What's the Difference
Updated 21 June 2026
These two terms get used loosely, but they're billed differently and it's worth knowing which one applies where before assuming a card is more or less expensive than it is.
Joining fee
A one-time charge at card issuance, separate from and in addition to the annual fee (even though they're sometimes set to the same number). Some cards refund the joining fee as reward points once you cross an early spend threshold — check whether that's the case rather than assuming it's a straight cost.
Processing fee
Usually specific to a transaction type rather than the card itself — EMI conversions, balance transfers, and some loan-against-card products commonly carry their own processing fee, charged at the time of that specific transaction, independent of the card's annual or joining fee.
