Credit Cards for Students in India: What's Actually Available
Updated 22 April 2026
Without independent income, a student's realistic paths to a credit card are narrower than a working adult's, but genuinely workable options exist.
The realistic paths
An add-on card under a parent's account is the simplest starting point — no independent approval needed, and it can (indirectly, per our add-on card guide) help build financial habits early even if it doesn't build the student's own score. A secured card against a fixed deposit, sometimes in the student's own name with a parent as guarantor depending on the issuer, is the most reliable way to get an independent card and start an independent credit history.
What to prioritize at this stage
At the student stage, a low or zero annual fee and a low credit limit (which naturally caps how much damage an overspend or lost card can do) matter far more than reward rate. The goal is building disciplined habits — paying in full, on time, every cycle — that a higher-value card will pay off on later.
