CIBIL Score and CIBIL Report: What's the Difference
Updated 8 April 2026
CIBIL score and CIBIL report get used interchangeably in everyday conversation, but they're different things — and the report is usually more useful to actually look at.
The score is a summary number
Your CIBIL score is a single three-digit number, 300–900, generated from your credit report using a scoring model. It's the fast signal lenders glance at first, but it doesn't tell you why it is what it is.
The report is the detail behind it
The CIBIL report lists every loan and credit card account reported against your name — credit limits, current balances, payment history month by month, and hard inquiries from past applications. This is where you'd spot an error (an account that isn't yours, a payment wrongly marked late) that's actually dragging your score down.
How often to check
You're entitled to one free full credit report per bureau per year in India; several banks and apps also show a soft-pull score more frequently at no cost. Checking your own score this way is a soft inquiry and doesn't affect it — only a lender's hard inquiry during a loan or card application does.
