Both cards earn the same Amex Membership Rewards points, so the choice comes down to fees, milestones and travel perks. Amex Membership Rewards is the better card for moderate spenders: its renewal fee is waived at ₹1.5 lakh a year and its monthly bonuses keep the earn rate steady. Amex Platinum Travel is the better card once you spend ₹4 lakh or more a year, because its milestone bonuses, Taj voucher and Priority Pass are worth more than its fixed ₹5,000 fee.

How the rewards actually work

Amex Platinum Travel

Amex Platinum Travel earns Membership Rewards points at a base rate BestCard lists as 2%, with points valued at 30 paise. Fuel, insurance, utility, cash and EMI transactions earn no points. The real value sits in the milestones: 7,500 bonus points at ₹1.9 lakh of spend in a cardmembership year, 10,000 more at ₹4 lakh, and 22,500 more plus a ₹10,000 Taj e-gift card at ₹7 lakh. The card also earns 3X points at 50+ partner brands through Amex's Reward Multiplier.

Amex Membership Rewards

Amex Membership Rewards earns 1 point per ₹50 on eligible spends, with fuel, insurance and utilities excluded. BestCard's 2% figure assumes you also collect the recurring monthly bonus points, which you earn by making a handful of qualifying transactions or hitting a spend threshold each month. Miss those and the effective rate drops. There is also a 4,000-point welcome bonus and a one-time bonus at first renewal.

We have valued every point at 30 paise in the examples below.

Worked example 1: ₹25,000 a month

Assume ₹3,000 of that goes on fuel and utility bills, which earn nothing on either card. Eligible spend is ₹22,000 a month, or ₹2.64 lakh a year.

Amex Platinum Travel

  • Base: 2% × ₹22,000 = ₹440 a month, ₹5,280 a year
  • Milestone: ₹2.64 lakh crosses ₹1.9 lakh, so 7,500 points × ₹0.30 = ₹2,250
  • Fee: ₹5,000, no waiver
  • Net: ₹7,530 − ₹5,000 = ₹2,530 a year

Amex Membership Rewards

  • Base with monthly bonuses: 2% × ₹22,000 = ₹440 a month, ₹5,280 a year
  • Fee: ₹3 lakh of annual spend clears the ₹1.5 lakh waiver
  • Net: ₹5,280 a year

Membership Rewards wins by about ₹2,750, simply because it doesn't charge a fee at this spend level.

Worked example 2: ₹65,000 a month

Assume ₹5,000 goes on fuel and bills. Eligible spend is ₹60,000 a month, or ₹7.2 lakh a year.

Amex Platinum Travel

  • Base: 2% × ₹60,000 = ₹1,200 a month, ₹14,400 a year
  • Milestones: all three tiers, 40,000 points × ₹0.30 = ₹12,000
  • Taj e-gift card: ₹10,000
  • Net: ₹36,400 − ₹5,000 = ₹31,400 a year

Amex Membership Rewards

  • Base with monthly bonuses: 2% × ₹60,000 = ₹1,200 a month
  • Fee waived
  • Net: ₹14,400 a year

Platinum Travel is ahead by roughly ₹17,000. The crossover sits around ₹4 lakh of eligible annual spend, where the second milestone lands. Just under ₹7 lakh, you lose the biggest tier, so it is worth checking whether a little extra spend gets you over the line.

Lounge access and travel

This is where the two cards differ most. From 1 October 2026, Platinum Travel gives 2 complimentary domestic lounge visits per calendar quarter, but only if you met the spend target in the previous quarter. BestCard's data lists ₹70,000 in Q3 2026 for Q4 visits and ₹1,00,000 a quarter from Q4 2026 onwards. It also includes a Priority Pass membership with the US$99 annual fee waived, though per-visit charges may still apply. Membership Rewards lists no lounge access at all.

Both cards charge a 3.5% forex markup, so neither is a good choice for foreign spending. For how spend-gated lounge rules work, see credit card lounge spend rules explained.

Redemption

Both cards earn the same currency, so redemption options are identical. Membership Rewards points don't expire, and there's no fee to transfer them to airline and hotel loyalty partners. That gives patient users room to wait for a good transfer. Our guide to transferring reward points to airline miles covers how to get more than 30 paise a point. Membership Rewards also offers up to 20% off at partner fine-dining restaurants.

Amex acceptance in India is narrower than Visa or Mastercard, so keep a second card for places that don't take it.

Fees and waivers

Platinum Travel's ₹5,000 fee is fixed every year, with no waiver. Membership Rewards charges ₹1,000 to join and ₹4,500 a year, waived on ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend in BestCard's data. Note that BestCard's data also records Amex ending a separate 50% renewal-fee waiver on ₹90,000 of spend on 15 November 2026, so confirm the current waiver rule with Amex. GST applies on top of all fees.

Platinum Travel needs ₹50,000 a month of income, against ₹37,500 for Membership Rewards. Membership Rewards is also issued only in a defined list of cities.

Who should pick which

Choose Amex Platinum Travel if:

  • You spend ₹4 lakh or more a year on eligible categories
  • You can reach ₹7 lakh for the Taj voucher and top milestone
  • You fly a few times a year and will use the lounge visits and Priority Pass

Choose Amex Membership Rewards if:

  • You spend between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹4 lakh a year
  • You'll make the small monthly transactions needed for the bonus points
  • You want the Amex points currency with the lowest running cost

Verdict

Amex Membership Rewards is the better everyday Amex for most moderate spenders, because the fee goes away and the earn rate matches Platinum Travel's base. Amex Platinum Travel is worth its fixed fee only if your spend reliably reaches the ₹4 lakh and ₹7 lakh milestones and you use the travel perks.
