AU Small Finance Bank has grown from a regional lender into a genuine credit card issuer with a handful of distinctive products, most notably the customizable LIT card. It's a smaller player next to HDFC, SBI, ICICI, and Axis, but that hasn't stopped it from carving out a real niche.

What makes AU different

Small finance banks operate under a different regulatory structure than universal banks, and AU has used that positioning to experiment more than larger issuers typically do. The flagship example is the AU Bank LIT card, which lets cardholders pick their own bonus reward categories rather than accepting a fixed structure — a genuinely uncommon feature in the Indian market.

The lineup

AU's card portfolio spans from simple, low-fee starter cards through to the more feature-rich LIT card. Compared to larger issuers, the range is narrower — there's no direct equivalent to a super-premium metal card like Magnus or Infinia — but for its target segment of value-conscious, moderate spenders, the lineup covers the basics competently.

Fees and accessibility

AU's cards generally carry lower annual fees than comparable products from the larger private banks, and eligibility criteria tend to be somewhat more accommodating. This makes AU a reasonable option for people who've been declined by bigger issuers or who are building credit history for the first time — see our beginners' guide for how a lower-barrier issuer like AU fits into that plan.

Where AU falls short

The obvious tradeoff is network size. AU has far fewer branches and ATMs than SBI, HDFC, or ICICI, and its app and customer support infrastructure, while improving, doesn't yet match the scale of the largest issuers. If in-person banking matters to you, factor that in before applying.

Rewards and redemption

Reward redemption options are more limited than what you'd find with a major issuer — fewer airline and hotel transfer partners, and a smaller rewards catalog. For most AU cardholders this is a minor tradeoff since the target use case is everyday spending rather than travel optimization, similar to the audience for our everyday spending cards guide.

Verdict

AU Small Finance Bank is a solid, underrated issuer for straightforward, moderately-rewarding credit cards, especially if the LIT card's customization appeals to you. It's not a competitor to the big four on scale or premium travel benefits, but it doesn't need to be for the segment it serves well.
