Metro card recharges are small — usually a few hundred rupees at a time — but for daily commuters in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other metro cities, these add up to a meaningful recurring spend category that most people never think to optimize.

Why this category is often missed

Metro recharges done through NCMC-enabled cards or via UPI-linked metro apps often get miscategorized by reward engines as wallet loads or transit rather than retail spend, which means many cards exclude them from earning any rewards at all. Before relying on a card for metro top-ups, check its terms specifically for transit or wallet-load exclusions — the fine print on most cards' reward exclusions list mentions this explicitly.

What works better

Cards that reward UPI-based everyday spending broadly, rather than narrow retail categories, tend to actually credit metro recharges done via linked UPI apps, since the transaction routes as a standard UPI payment rather than a flagged wallet top-up. If your city's metro supports direct NCMC card-linked recharge through your bank's app, check whether that specific flow is excluded — some banks exclude NCMC top-ups by name even while rewarding general UPI spend.

The bigger picture

No card is going to make metro recharges a major rewards category on their own — the amounts are too small. The value here is in not actively losing rewards on a transaction you're making dozens of times a year, not in chasing meaningful cashback from it.

Where to go from here
