The IDFC FIRST WOW! Black is a fixed-deposit-backed credit card with features you'd normally only see on unsecured travel cards: a 0% forex markup, up to 16.7% value-back on travel bookings and airport lounge access. It suits people who want to build credit or don't have income proof, but still travel. If you qualify for an unsecured card, though, you'll usually get more for less.

Who this card is for

The WOW! Black fits a specific set of people:

  • Credit builders with no credit history who want a card that isn't bare-bones
  • Freelancers, homemakers and students without the salary slips banks usually ask for
  • People rebuilding a damaged score who still travel occasionally
  • Anyone with an FD who wants zero-markup international spending without an income check

Because it's secured against an FD, approval depends on the deposit rather than your income. The credit limit is linked to the FD amount, so check IDFC's current limit-to-deposit ratio before you open one.

Fees and fee waiver

Item IDFC FIRST WOW! Black
Joining fee ₹750 + GST
Annual fee ₹750 + GST
Fee waiver ₹1,50,000 annual spend
Forex markup 0%
Collateral Fixed deposit
Network Visa

The ₹1.5 lakh waiver works out to ₹12,500 a month, which is achievable if this is your main card. Remember that your credit limit caps how much you can spend, so a small FD makes the waiver harder to reach.

Reward structure

All figures come from BestCard's latest card data. IDFC updates its card terms regularly, so confirm the current rates on IDFC's site before you apply.

  • Up to 16.7% value-back on travel bookings
  • 1% cashback on other spends

The travel figure is an "up to" rate, which usually means it applies to bookings made through a specific channel. Check which booking platform qualifies before you plan around it.

Worked example

Say you spend ₹20,000 a month, of which ₹5,000 is travel booked through the qualifying channel:

Category Monthly spend Rate Value
Travel bookings ₹5,000 16.7% ₹835
Other spends ₹15,000 1% ₹150
Total ₹20,000 ₹985

That's about ₹11,820 a year. Annual spend is ₹2,40,000, which clears the ₹1.5 lakh waiver, so the fee is effectively zero. The ₹20,000 monthly spend also unlocks the quarterly lounge visit.

Without the travel bookings, the same ₹20,000 earns just ₹200 a month at 1%. This card's value depends heavily on how much travel you book.

Forex savings abroad

The 0% markup is the other big draw. On ₹1,00,000 of international spends, a typical 3.5% card charges ₹3,500 plus ₹630 GST, so ₹4,130. WOW! Black charges nothing. For a secured card, that's unusual. Note that IDFC has announced international spends stop earning reward points on several of its cards from 26 October 2026, so check whether WOW! Black is affected before counting on rewards abroad.

Lounge access and other benefits

Our data lists 1 complimentary domestic airport lounge visit per quarter (4 a year), unlocked by spending ₹20,000 in the current calendar month. IDFC's benefit list also mentions international lounge access, but the specific visit count isn't in our data, so check the current terms on IDFC's site.

Beyond that, the benefit list is short. This is a card for forex savings and travel value-back, not a lifestyle card.

Tips for using it well

Open an FD large enough to give you a comfortable limit, since using more than about 30% of your limit can weigh on your credit score. Pay the full statement balance every month; a secured card builds credit only if your repayment record is clean. Route travel bookings through the channel that earns the 16.7% value-back, and make sure you spend ₹20,000 in the months you want the lounge visit. Keep the FD running even after you get an unsecured card, if you want to keep this card's zero forex markup for trips.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Secured against an FD, so no income proof or credit history needed
  • 0% forex markup, rare at this price and in the secured segment
  • Up to 16.7% value-back on travel bookings
  • Domestic lounge access, which most secured cards don't offer
  • Low ₹750 fee, waived at ₹1.5 lakh annual spend

Cons

  • Ties up money in an FD as collateral
  • Only 1% back outside travel
  • Lounge access needs ₹20,000 spend in the month
  • Fewer independent reviews than IDFC's unsecured travel cards
  • International lounge details aren't clearly spelled out

Eligibility

You need a fixed deposit with IDFC FIRST Bank. Income proof and credit history aren't required, which is the whole point of a secured card. Using it well, paying in full and on time, builds your credit history, and after a year or so of clean repayments you may qualify for an unsecured card. Our guide to secured cards vs FDs for building credit explains the process.

How it compares with alternatives

IDFC FIRST WOW!: the base version is lifetime free, also FD-secured with a 0% markup, and earns 2% on online shopping with a 0.5% base. No lounges. If you don't book much travel, the free version may serve you better. Read our IDFC FIRST WOW! review.

ICICI Coral Against FD: ₹500 a year, 2% on dining, and 1 domestic lounge visit per quarter subject to a spend condition. It charges a 3.5% forex markup, so it's weaker for international travel.

Federal Bank Scapia: not secured, but lifetime free with a 0% markup and unlimited domestic lounge access on ₹5,000 monthly spend. If you earn ₹25,000 a month and have some credit history, this is a better deal than locking money in an FD.

Verdict

The IDFC FIRST WOW! Black is the most travel-friendly secured card in India on our data. Zero forex markup, lounge access and strong travel value-back make it a real upgrade over basic FD cards, and the ₹750 fee is easy to waive. It's the right pick if you can't get an unsecured card yet and you travel at least occasionally. If you already qualify for an unsecured card, skip the FD and look at the Federal Bank Scapia instead.
