IDFC FIRST WOW and SBI Cashback Card are both entry-level, but they are built for different people. WOW is a fixed-deposit-backed card for anyone who is starting out or rebuilding credit, and it is lifetime free with zero forex markup. SBI Cashback is an unsecured card that pays 5% on online spending, aimed at people who already shop online every month. If your credit history is fine and you buy online, SBI Cashback earns far more. If you cannot get an unsecured card or you spend abroad, WOW is the better tool.

How the rewards actually work

IDFC FIRST WOW

IDFC FIRST WOW earns a flat 0.5%, with points valued at 25 paise. Our data lists no bonus categories, so reward value is small. The reason to hold it is the structure: a ₹20,000 FD secures the card, no income proof is needed, and your credit limit is tied to the FD amount. It also carries 0% forex markup and 4 complimentary lounge visits a year, both unusual at this level.

SBI Cashback Card

SBI Cashback Card pays 5% on online spending across e-commerce merchants, capped at ₹2,000 of cashback a month, and 1% on everything else. That cap is reached at ₹40,000 of online spend a month. Cashback is credited automatically to your statement.

Worked example 1: ₹25,000 a month

Split: ₹10,000 online, ₹15,000 offline. Annual spend ₹3 lakh.

IDFC FIRST WOW

  • 0.5% × ₹25,000 = ₹125
  • Total: ₹125 a month, ₹1,500 a year

SBI Cashback

  • Online: 5% × ₹10,000 = ₹500
  • Offline: 1% × ₹15,000 = ₹150
  • Total: ₹650 a month, ₹7,800 a year
  • ₹3 lakh clears the ₹2 lakh waiver, so no fee

SBI Cashback earns about ₹6,300 more.

Worked example 2: ₹50,000 a month

Split: ₹25,000 online, ₹25,000 offline. Annual spend ₹6 lakh.

IDFC FIRST WOW

  • 0.5% × ₹50,000 = ₹250
  • Total: ₹250 a month, ₹3,000 a year

SBI Cashback

  • Online: 5% × ₹25,000 = ₹1,250, under the ₹2,000 cap
  • Offline: 1% × ₹25,000 = ₹250
  • Total: ₹1,500 a month, ₹18,000 a year
  • Fee waived

The gap is now ₹15,000 a year. WOW's FD, by contrast, is not spent: it stays locked, but you should count the interest the same money would have earned elsewhere.

Lounge access and travel

WOW lists 4 complimentary lounge visits a year with no spend condition in our data, and a 0% forex markup. On ₹1 lakh of foreign spend that saves ₹3,500 compared with SBI Cashback's 3.5%. SBI Cashback lists no lounge access. For anyone who travels abroad, WOW is the cheaper way to pay overseas, even though its rewards are weak. Fees and waivers

WOW costs nothing, ever, but you must lock a ₹20,000 fixed deposit, and your limit stays tied to it. SBI Cashback costs ₹999 a year, waived at ₹2 lakh of annual spend. If you spend less than ₹16,700 a month, subtract ₹999 from its earnings. Even at ₹10,000 a month spent entirely online, SBI Cashback earns ₹6,000 a year, or ₹5,001 after the fee, against ₹600 for WOW.

Who should pick which

Choose IDFC FIRST WOW if:

  • You have no credit history or are rebuilding after a bad patch
  • You cannot show income proof
  • You spend abroad often and want 0% forex markup
  • You want a lifetime free card with a few lounge visits

Choose SBI Cashback if:

  • You shop online every month and spend ₹20,000 or more on it
  • You earn at least ₹25,000 a month
  • You want cashback that credits itself
  • You rarely spend abroad

Verdict

If you qualify for it, SBI Cashback is the clear winner on rewards: about ₹7,800 to ₹18,000 a year in our examples against ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 for WOW. IDFC FIRST WOW wins only on access and forex. A sensible path is to start with WOW, build a payment history, and then add SBI Cashback.
