Credit Cards for NRIs: What's Different
Updated 25 June 2026
NRIs can get Indian credit cards, but the eligibility path runs through NRE/NRO banking relationships rather than the standard salaried/self-employed route most resident applicants use.
The account requirement
Most issuers require an existing NRE or NRO account with them (sometimes with a minimum balance or fixed deposit) before considering a credit card application — it's the primary way they establish a banking relationship and, often, a secured limit against that account.
What else differs
Income verification typically relies on overseas income proof and the NRE/NRO account's transaction history rather than a domestic ITR. Some issuers offer NRI-specific card variants with benefits tuned to that profile — lower forex markup, international lounge access — worth comparing against a standard resident card rather than assuming they're identical products.
