Are Airport Lounge Benefits Disappearing From Credit Cards?

Every few months someone posts about a card "downgrading" its lounge benefit, and it feeds a narrative that the perk is being phased out entirely. It isn't. What's actually happening is more specific, and understanding it helps you plan around it instead of just feeling cheated.

Lounges are physically overcrowded

Domestic and international lounges at major Indian airports have seen a sharp rise in eligible cardholders over the past few years, since nearly every mid-tier card added some form of lounge access as a selling point. Lounge operators run on fixed floor space and staff capacity. When more people show up than the lounge was built for, operators renegotiate their contracts with banks — either charging more per visit or capping how many cardholders from a given bank can enter per slot. This is the single biggest driver of tighter rules, more than any single bank deciding to cut costs.

Real estate and F&B costs at airports keep rising

Airport retail and lounge space is leased at a premium, and food and beverage costs inside the terminal are higher than almost anywhere else. Lounge operators pass this up the chain to the banks that pay for their cardholders' visits. Banks absorb some of it but also push back by narrowing who qualifies, which shows up to you as new spend thresholds or reduced guest allowances.

Unlimited access was never going to last

"Unlimited lounge access" was a strong marketing line during a period when banks were racing for premium cardholders and lounge usage was still relatively low. As usage caught up with capacity, unlimited access became financially unsustainable per card. What replaced it is a shift toward gated access — spend-linked, quarterly, or ticket-linked conditions — which lets banks keep offering the benefit without an open-ended cost.

The honest verdict

The benefit isn't disappearing. It's being rationed with more precision so banks can keep offering it profitably while lounges stay usable rather than overflowing. That's a defensible trade-off from the bank's side, even if it's annoying from yours.

What to actually do about it

Don't assume last year's terms still apply. Re-check lounge eligibility rules every time your card renews or whenever you're planning a trip that depends on it — treat it as a five-minute pre-travel task, not a fixed fact about the card you signed up for.
