HDFC Diners Club Black is the stronger card by a wide margin if you qualify for it. It pays a higher base rate, gives unlimited lounge access and golf, and its ₹10,000 fee disappears at ₹8 lakh of yearly spend. Amex Platinum Travel is a different product: a ₹5,000 card with a ₹50,000 monthly income bar, spend-gated lounge visits and a high forex markup. Its case rests on being attainable rather than on beating Diners Black.

How the rewards work

HDFC Diners Club Black

HDFC Diners Club Black earns a 3.33% base rate in our data, and 6.66% on dining, which the benefit text describes as 2X points on weekend dining at participating restaurants. It values points at ₹1 each. Actual redemption value varies by route: SmartBuy flights and hotels and statement credit carry no redemption fee, while catalogue redemptions carry a nominal one. Every calendar quarter in which you spend ₹4 lakh, you get another 10,000 bonus points. New cardholders who spend ₹1.5 lakh in the first 90 days unlock Club Marriott, Amazon Prime and Swiggy One memberships. Our data also lists up to 40% off dining via Swiggy Dineout, 6 golf games or lessons every quarter, and 1% fuel surcharge waiver on transactions from ₹400 to ₹1,00,000 (capped at ₹1,000 a cycle).

Amex Platinum Travel

Amex Platinum Travel earns Membership Rewards points that BestCard rates at 2% effective, each point worth 30 paise. Fuel, insurance, utility, cash and EMI transactions earn no points at all. There's a 3X multiplier at 50+ partner brands, and two milestones: 10,000 points at ₹4 lakh of spend in a cardmembership year (worth about ₹3,000 at 30 paise) and a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-gift card at ₹7 lakh. First-year members get 10,000 points on ₹15,000 spent within 90 days.

Worked example 1: ₹1.5 lakh a month

Split: ₹20,000 on dining, ₹1,30,000 on everything else. We leave out fuel, utility, insurance and EMI spend because Amex pays nothing on it and we don't have HDFC's exclusion list. Annual spend ₹18 lakh.

HDFC Diners Club Black

  • Dining: 6.66% × ₹20,000 = ₹1,332
  • Other: 3.33% × ₹1,30,000 = ₹4,329
  • Total ₹5,661 a month, ₹67,932 a year
  • Quarterly spend of ₹4.5 lakh clears ₹4 lakh, so 4 × 10,000 points = ₹40,000
  • ₹18 lakh clears the ₹8 lakh waiver, so no fee
  • Total: about ₹1,07,900 a year

Amex Platinum Travel

  • ₹1,50,000 × 2% = ₹3,000 a month, ₹36,000 a year
  • ₹18 lakh crosses both milestones: 10,000 points (₹3,000) plus the ₹20,000 Taj e-gift card
  • Minus the ₹5,000 fee
  • Total: ₹54,000 a year

Diners Black earns roughly double. The ₹20,000 Taj card is also only useful if you'd stay at a Taj property anyway.

Worked example 2: ₹3 lakh a month

Split: ₹40,000 on dining, ₹2,60,000 on everything else. Annual spend ₹36 lakh.

HDFC Diners Club Black

  • Dining: 6.66% × ₹40,000 = ₹2,664
  • Other: 3.33% × ₹2,60,000 = ₹8,658
  • Total ₹11,322 a month, ₹1,35,864 a year
  • Quarterly spend of ₹9 lakh: 4 × 10,000 points = ₹40,000
  • Fee waived
  • Total: about ₹1,75,900 a year

Amex Platinum Travel

  • ₹3,00,000 × 2% = ₹6,000 a month, ₹72,000 a year
  • Milestones: ₹3,000 plus the ₹20,000 Taj card
  • Minus the ₹5,000 fee
  • Total: ₹90,000 a year

The gap widens to about ₹85,900 a year. Two caveats. First, we value Diners Black points at the ₹1 listed in our data, which assumes good redemptions. Second, if only weekend dining earns the 6.66%, dining drops to the 3.33% base and Diners Black loses up to about ₹8,000 a year in example 1 and ₹16,000 in example 2. It still wins comfortably.

Lounge access, golf and travel

This is where the two cards are least alike. Diners Black lists unlimited domestic lounge access and unlimited access to 1,300+ international lounges through Priority Pass, for both the primary and add-on cardholders. It also adds 6 golf games or lessons every quarter, ₹2 crore of air accident cover and up to ₹50 lakh of emergency overseas hospitalisation cover.

Amex Platinum Travel gives 2 complimentary domestic lounge visits per quarter from 1 October 2026, but only if you hit the previous quarter's spend: ₹70,000 in Q3 2026 for Q4 visits, then ₹1,00,000 a quarter from Q4 2026 onwards. International access is a Priority Pass membership with the US$99 fee waived, and per-visit charges may still apply, so it is not free access. Our guide to quarterly spend triggers for lounge perks explains these gates.

On forex, Diners Black's 2% beats Amex's 3.5%: on ₹1 lakh abroad, that's ₹2,000 against ₹3,500. Acceptance is the catch for both. Our data flags Diners Club's narrower merchant acceptance in India, especially outside metros and for overseas in-store spend, and Amex is likewise a narrower network than Visa or Mastercard, so keep a Visa or Mastercard card as backup. Our explainer on network-level lounge perks covers how networks differ.

Fees and waivers

Diners Black's ₹10,000 fee is waived at ₹8 lakh a year, about ₹66,700 a month. Amex Platinum Travel's ₹5,000 is the same every year. Below ₹4 lakh of spend, Amex gives you very little back for it.

The income bars are the real divide. Diners Black asks for ₹2,50,000 a month and a 760 credit score. Amex asks for ₹50,000 and 750. If you earn between those, Amex is the only one of the two you can get.

Who should pick which

Choose Diners Club Black if:

  • You earn ₹2,50,000 a month or more
  • You spend ₹8 lakh or more a year and want the fee gone
  • You'll use unlimited lounges, golf and dining offers
  • You travel abroad and want a 2% forex markup

Choose Amex Platinum Travel if:

  • Your income is below ₹2,50,000 but at least ₹50,000
  • You can reach ₹4 lakh to ₹7 lakh of annual spend on Amex-accepting merchants
  • You would use a Taj voucher
  • You mostly want a single premium card to carry alongside a Visa or Mastercard

Verdict

If you qualify, HDFC Diners Club Black is the better card on rewards, lounges and forex. If you don't, Amex Platinum Travel is a reasonable entry to premium cards, provided you reach ₹4 lakh of annual spend and don't mind spend-gated lounge visits. Neither card is an everyday workhorse on its own, and both do best alongside a widely accepted second card.
