IndianOil Axis Bank Premium credit card

The IndianOil Axis Bank Premium Credit Card is the step-up version of Axis's IndianOil co-brand. It earns EDGE Miles at an accelerated rate on IndianOil fuel, waives the fuel surcharge without a rupee cap, and adds spend-gated domestic lounge visits and a recurring Zomato discount. It's built for drivers who fill up at IndianOil (IOCL) outlets regularly and put enough on the card to unlock the extras. For that person it's a strong fuel card. For anyone else, the weak base rate makes it hard to justify.

Fees and eligibility at a glance

The joining fee and annual fee are both ₹1,000. The annual fee is waived once you spend ₹1 lakh in a year, about ₹8,300 a month, and wallet loads, rent and insurance payments don't count toward that total. Salaried and self-employed applicants aged 18 to 70 can apply. It runs on Visa.

Rewards and how they actually work

The card earns EDGE Miles. Fuel at IndianOil earns at a 4% rate, capped at ₹15,000 of fuel spend a month, which puts the maximum fuel reward at ₹600 a month. Groceries earn 1.33%, subject to a ₹5,000 monthly cap. Everything else earns just 0.67%.

For a driver spending ₹8,000 a month at IndianOil, 4% works out to ₹320 a month, about ₹3,840 a year. Add the uncapped 1% fuel surcharge waiver on the same spend, around ₹80 a month, and the total fuel saving gets close to 5%. Above ₹15,000 a month at the pump, the extra fuel spend no longer earns the bonus rate.

EDGE Miles are flexible. You can redeem them 1:1 directly against IndianOil fuel purchases with no fee, or transfer them at 2:1 to more than 15 airline and hotel loyalty partners, also with no fee. New cardholders get 500 EDGE Miles on their first transaction within 30 days of issuance.

Lounge access, dining and fuel perks

The card offers up to 8 complimentary domestic lounge visits a year, 2 per quarter, unlocked only if you've spent ₹50,000 on the card in the preceding three months. That's around ₹16,700 a month, more than most people spend on fuel alone, so the lounge visits are realistic only if this is a primary card. The fuel surcharge waiver is 1% with no rupee cap, more generous than the ₹400 per cycle cap common on Axis's entry and mid-tier cards. And there's a 30% Zomato discount twice a month on orders of ₹200 or more, capped at ₹150 off per order, so up to ₹300 a month if you use both. Cash withdrawals cost 2.5% of the amount, minimum ₹500.

How it compares with the base IndianOil Axis card and HDFC IndianOil

The base IndianOil Axis Bank Credit Card costs ₹500, is waived at ₹3.5 lakh of annual spend, and also lists a 4% rate on IndianOil fuel. It pays a better 1% base rate on general spend and runs on RuPay, so it can be linked to UPI. But its fuel surcharge waiver is capped at just ₹50 per statement cycle, and it has no lounge access or Zomato discount. The Premium wins for heavier fuel spenders who value the uncapped waiver and the extras. The base card is simpler for light drivers who also want UPI.

HDFC IndianOil costs ₹500, waived at ₹50,000 of annual spend, and pays 5% on fuel, groceries and utilities, but each category is capped at ₹250 of rewards a month. On fuel, that cap is reached at ₹5,000 of spend. Below that level, HDFC's 5% is slightly better. Above it, the Axis Premium's 4% up to ₹15,000 pulls ahead, earning up to ₹600 a month on fuel against HDFC's ₹250.

What's genuinely good about this card

The uncapped fuel surcharge waiver is rare and adds a real 1% on top of the fuel reward rate. The ₹15,000 monthly fuel cap is roomy enough for most private car owners. EDGE Miles can go straight back into fuel or out to travel partners. The Zomato discount adds everyday value, and the fee waiver threshold is easy to reach.

Where it falls short

The 0.67% base rate is weak, so the card does little for spending outside IndianOil, groceries and Zomato. The fuel bonus applies only at IndianOil outlets. Lounge access needs ₹50,000 of spend every quarter, which rules it out for most people who use this purely as a fuel card. And the grocery rate of 1.33% is modest at best.

Who this card actually makes sense for

The IndianOil Axis Premium card suits a driver who fuels mostly at IndianOil, spends somewhere between ₹5,000 and ₹15,000 a month at the pump, and will actually use the Zomato discount. If you also route enough other spending through it to reach ₹50,000 a quarter, the lounge visits make it a surprisingly well-rounded mid-tier card. If you drive occasionally or fill up wherever is cheapest, a general-purpose cashback card will serve you better.
