Fuel Surcharge Waiver Credit Cards: What the Waiver Actually Saves You
20 June 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

Most fuel stations in India add a 1% surcharge when you pay by credit card, meant to offset the transaction fee the fuel station itself pays. It's a small percentage on any single transaction, which is exactly why most people ignore it — but it adds up to a real number over a year of regular fill-ups, and a fair number of cards waive it entirely.
How the waiver actually works
A fuel surcharge waiver card refunds the 1% surcharge, usually as a statement credit, on transactions at fuel stations within a specified range — often between ₹400 and ₹5,000 per transaction, with a monthly cap on the total waiver amount. The cap matters more than people expect: if you fill up for ₹3,000 twice a month, check that the monthly waiver ceiling actually covers both transactions, since some cards cap the benefit at a level that only covers one.
Is it worth choosing a card for this alone
For most people, no — the fuel surcharge waiver is a nice detail to have on a card you'd choose anyway for other reasons, not a reason to pick a card on its own. If you drive frequently and fuel is a meaningful chunk of your monthly spend, it's worth checking whether your existing card already includes this waiver before assuming you need a new one.

Fuel cards vs a fuel surcharge waiver
Don't confuse a fuel surcharge waiver with a dedicated fuel rewards card — the two are different things. A fuel rewards card gives you accelerated cashback or points specifically on fuel purchases, on top of or instead of the surcharge waiver. If fuel is genuinely one of your top two or three spending categories, a dedicated fuel card usually beats a generic card with just a waiver, since the ongoing reward rate compounds while the surcharge waiver is a fixed, capped benefit.
Several issuers, including SBI Card, offer this combination on select cards — you can check current fuel benefits and apply through the SBI Card page if fuel spending is a significant part of your monthly budget.
