Best Cashback Credit Cards in India: How to Actually Compare Them

Cashback cards are the easiest reward type to understand and the easiest to misjudge. A headline "5% cashback" sounds simple until you read the fine print on category caps, monthly ceilings, and which merchants actually qualify. Before comparing any two cards, it helps to know what to check rather than just what to chase.

Flat-rate vs category cashback

A flat-rate cashback card pays the same percentage on everything, which is easiest to reason about and hardest to accidentally waste — you don't need to track which purchase qualifies. A category cashback card pays a higher rate on specific spends (groceries, fuel, utility bills, one particular app) but drops to a much lower base rate everywhere else. If your spending is broad and unpredictable, flat-rate wins. If two or three categories dominate your spending, a category card will out-earn flat-rate within those categories, sometimes by a wide margin.

The SBI Card lineup includes both types, and its flat-rate cashback options are a solid starting point if you want something simple to hold as your primary card — you can check current terms and apply through the SBI Card page.

Watch the monthly caps

The number that actually determines your real earn rate isn't the headline percentage — it's the monthly cashback cap. A 5% card capped at ₹1,000 a month effectively becomes a much lower blended rate once you spend past that cap, which most people do within the first two weeks of a billing cycle. Always calculate cashback as a percentage of your typical monthly spend against the cap, not against the advertised rate.

Where Axis Bank fits in

Axis Bank's cashback cards are worth a look if you want a flat, no-fuss rate without needing to track bonus categories — the appeal is the same reasoning as above, simplicity over marginal optimization. Check the current offers and apply through the Axis Bank credit card portal if that matches how you spend.

Cashback credit vs statement credit

Some cards deposit cashback directly, others apply it as a statement credit against your next bill — check which one before assuming you can withdraw or transfer it. Also check the redemption timeline; some issuers post cashback within days, others take a full billing cycle, which matters if you're timing a large purchase around it.
