Best Fuel Credit Cards in India: Surcharge Waivers Compared

If you drive regularly, fuel is one of the few expenses where a co-branded credit card genuinely pays for itself. Between the 1% surcharge waiver most cards offer and the accelerated reward rates on dedicated fuel cards, a heavy fuel spender can save a meaningful amount every year just by using the right card at the pump.

What to actually look for

Two separate benefits matter here, and they're easy to conflate. The fuel surcharge waiver — covered in detail in our fuel surcharge waiver guide — refunds the 1% surcharge that fuel stations charge on card payments, usually capped per transaction and per month. The reward rate is separate: co-branded cards from IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL give accelerated points or direct fuel credits on top of the surcharge waiver, which is where the real savings show up for frequent fuellers.

HPCL SBI Card

Consistently one of the strongest fuel cards on the market — around 7.5% value back on HPCL fuel spends through reward points (capped monthly), plus the standard 1% surcharge waiver. Low annual fee, and the fee is easily waived against a modest annual spend threshold. Best suited to anyone who fills up primarily at HPCL outlets. As an SBI Card, it also plugs into SBI's broad reward ecosystem for everything else you spend on.

BPCL SBI Card Octane

Built specifically around BPCL fuel stations, offering high reward rates on fuel along with bonus points on groceries, movies, and dining — making it a reasonable everyday card rather than a single-purpose fuel card. The surcharge waiver applies at BPCL pumps specifically. Like the HPCL card, this is another SBI Card offering, so the same referral link applies if you're comparing SBI's fuel lineup.

IndianOil HDFC Bank Credit Card

Pairs with IOCL outlets for accelerated fuel points plus the surcharge waiver, and HDFC's card has a wider general merchant reward structure than most single-issuer fuel cards, so it works reasonably well as a primary card if IOCL is your regular pump. See our HDFC credit cards guide for how it compares to HDFC's other offerings.

Axis Bank fuel-friendly cards

Axis doesn't run a dedicated oil-company co-brand in the same way SBI does, but several Axis Bank credit cards include the standard fuel surcharge waiver plus decent general cashback that effectively covers fuel spends well if you're not tied to one specific fuel brand and want flexibility across pumps.

How to pick between them

If you consistently fill up at the same brand of pump — HPCL, BPCL, or IOCL — the matching co-brand card wins outright because the accelerated reward rate only applies there. If you fill up wherever is convenient, a general cashback or rewards card with a solid fuel surcharge waiver (many of the best cashback credit cards qualify) is more practical than chasing a co-brand you'll only partially benefit from.

Also check the reward cap — most fuel co-brand cards cap monthly bonus points at a fixed spend level (often ₹4,000-5,000 of fuel), beyond which you earn at the base rate. If your monthly fuel bill regularly exceeds that cap, the accelerated rate matters less than you'd think, and a flat-rate cashback card might net you more.

Where to go from here

Read the fuel surcharge waiver guide for the mechanics of how the waiver itself is applied and capped, and compare against our best cashback credit cards in India if you'd rather optimize for overall spend than fuel specifically. If your driving is occasional rather than daily, a no-annual-fee card with a basic surcharge waiver is probably enough.
