Dubai trips tend to be spend-heavy: malls, dining, desert safaris and duty-free shopping. That makes forex markup the biggest hidden cost. A zero or low markup card is the first thing to get right. If you fly Emirates, an Emirates Skywards ICICI card adds miles, Skywards tier status and lounge access. Below are six cards from BestCard's data for different budgets.

What matters for a Dubai trip

  1. Forex markup. At 3.5% plus 18% GST, every AED 1,000 costs you about 4.1% extra. On a ₹2 lakh trip, that's over ₹8,000.
  2. Network. Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere in Dubai. RuPay acceptance is much more limited, so don't rely on a RuPay-only card.
  3. Lounges. Dubai has many international lounges, and a long wait at the airport is common on the way home.
  4. Duty-free. A couple of cards in our data reward airport and duty-free shopping specifically.

The shortlist

IDFC FIRST Select: best free zero-forex card

IDFC FIRST Select is lifetime free, charges 0% forex markup and earns 4% on travel and dining (0.5% base). That covers a lot of a Dubai trip: hotels, restaurants and tours. It gives domestic lounge visits (1 a quarter on ₹20,000 spend in the preceding month) but no international lounge. Minimum income is ₹1 lakh a month.

Scapia Axis Bank card: zero forex plus duty-free back

The Scapia Axis Bank card has no fee, charges 0% forex markup on online and in-store spends, and gives up to ₹2,000 back in Scapia Coins on airport shopping and duty-free. It earns up to 20% in Coins on flights and hotels booked in the Scapia app, and unlocks unlimited domestic lounges in months you spend ₹20,000. You can apply for the Scapia Axis card here.

Emirates Skywards ICICI Emeralde: for frequent Emirates flyers

The Emirates Skywards ICICI Bank Emeralde costs ₹10,000 a year and suits people who fly Emirates often. You get 10,000 bonus Skywards Miles on issuance, Skywards Silver tier (upgradeable to Gold on spend milestones), unlimited domestic and international lounges and a 1.5% forex markup. It earns 2% in Skywards Miles. Minimum income is ₹1.5 lakh a month.

Emirates Skywards ICICI Sapphiro: the mid-tier option

The Emirates Skywards ICICI Bank Sapphiro costs ₹5,000, gives 5,000 bonus Skywards Miles, Silver tier with a path to Gold, 2 domestic lounge visits a quarter and 2 international visits a year. Forex markup is 2% and it earns 1.5% base and 2% on travel. Minimum income is ₹60,000.

AU Zenith Plus: low markup and lots of lounges

AU Bank Zenith Plus costs ₹4,999 (waived on ₹8 lakh spend), charges just 0.99% forex markup, and gives 16 international and 16 domestic lounge visits a year, plus Airport Meet & Assist. It earns 2% on travel and dining. It's a strong pick for families who travel abroad a few times a year.

Yes Bank Marquee: high rewards with 1% markup

Yes Bank Marquee charges 1% forex markup and earns 6% on travel, 5% on dining and 3% base (points at 30 paise). Lounge access is unlimited internationally through Priority Pass, with 24 domestic visits a year. The joining fee is ₹9,999 and renewal ₹4,999 (waived on ₹10 lakh). Minimum income is ₹2 lakh a month.

Summary table

Card Annual fee Forex markup International lounge Best for
IDFC FIRST Select ₹0 0% None Free card, 4% travel and dining
Scapia Axis Bank ₹0 0% None Free card, duty-free back
Emirates ICICI Emeralde ₹10,000 1.5% Unlimited Frequent Emirates flyers
Emirates ICICI Sapphiro ₹5,000 2% 2 a year Occasional Emirates flyers
AU Zenith Plus ₹4,999 0.99% 16 a year Families, lounge-heavy travel
Yes Bank Marquee ₹4,999 1% Unlimited High spenders

Worked example: a ₹2 lakh Dubai holiday

Say you spend ₹2 lakh in Dubai on hotel, dining, a desert safari and shopping. Here's the forex cost on each type of card:

  • 3.5% markup card: ₹7,000 + ₹1,260 GST = ₹8,260 extra
  • 2% (Emirates Sapphiro): ₹4,000 + ₹720 GST = ₹4,720 extra
  • 1.5% (Emirates Emeralde): ₹3,000 + ₹540 GST = ₹3,540 extra
  • 1% (Yes Marquee): ₹2,000 + ₹360 GST = ₹2,360 extra
  • 0.99% (AU Zenith Plus): ₹1,980 + ₹356 GST = ₹2,336 extra
  • 0% (IDFC FIRST Select, Scapia): ₹0 extra

Now add rewards. If ₹1.2 lakh of that codes as travel and dining:

  • IDFC FIRST Select: ₹1,20,000 × 4% + ₹80,000 × 0.5% = ₹4,800 + ₹400 = ₹5,200 back, with no markup
  • Yes Marquee: at a blended 5.5% on travel and dining, ₹6,600, plus ₹80,000 × 3% = ₹2,400, for ₹9,000 in points. After ₹2,360 markup, about ₹6,640 net, but only if you value Marquee points at our 30-paise rate and can live with the fee.

For most one-off holidaymakers, the free IDFC card gives the best net result without any annual fee.

How to choose

  • One holiday, no fee wanted: IDFC FIRST Select or Scapia Axis.
  • Big duty-free shopping list: Scapia Axis for up to ₹2,000 back on airport shopping.
  • Emirates several times a year: Emirates ICICI Emeralde (or Sapphiro on a smaller budget) for tickets and lounges, with a zero-forex card for spending on the ground.
  • Family travelling often: AU Zenith Plus for its lounge allowance and low markup.

Tips before you fly

  • Always pay in AED. Decline rupee conversion at terminals. Our DCC explainer shows why.
  • Switch on international usage and set limits in your bank app.
  • Carry a backup Visa or Mastercard on a different bank.
  • Check the current TCS rules on overseas card spends with your bank or a tax advisor.

All figures come from BestCard's latest card data. Issuers change fees and benefits regularly, so verify on the issuer's website before applying. To find the right card for your travel pattern and everyday spends, use the BestCard matcher.

Frequently asked questions

Which credit card is best for shopping in Dubai?

A zero or near-zero forex markup card saves the most on shopping. IDFC FIRST Select and the Scapia Axis Bank card charge 0%, AU Zenith Plus charges 0.99% and Yes Marquee charges 1%.

Are Emirates Skywards ICICI cards worth it for Dubai trips?

They suit people who fly Emirates often. The Emeralde variant gives unlimited lounge access, 10,000 bonus Skywards Miles on issuance and a 1.5% forex markup. For a one-off holiday, a free zero-forex card usually saves more.

Should I pay in AED or INR in Dubai?

Pay in UAE dirhams (AED). Choosing rupees at the terminal triggers dynamic currency conversion, which usually uses a worse rate than your card network.

Do I need to tell my bank before travelling to Dubai?

Indian cards need international usage switched on. Enable it in your bank's app or net banking before you leave, and set a sensible limit.
