Best Credit Cards for Flight Bookings in India

Flight bookings carry a convenience fee on almost every platform — airline site, MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, wherever you book — and that fee alone can run ₹200-400 per ticket. A surprising number of cards waive it outright, and that waiver alone can be worth more than the reward points you'd earn on the base fare.

Convenience fee waivers are the easy win

Most people don't realize the convenience fee is often a card-specific waiver, not a platform-wide one. Several premium and travel co-branded cards waive it automatically when you pay through the airline's own site; on third-party platforms like MakeMyTrip it depends on the specific tie-up running that month. Before you book, it's worth the 30 seconds to check whether your card waives this fee on the platform you're using — it's the one saving you're guaranteed to get regardless of route or fare.

Airline-specific discounts vs issuer portal discounts

Airlines like IndiGo, Vistara (now Air India), and SpiceJet periodically run their own card-linked discounts — a flat percentage or fixed amount off when you pay with a specific bank's card, independent of any reward program. These show up during sales and aren't permanent, so they're not something to plan a card strategy around, just something to check at checkout.

The more consistent saving is through issuer travel portals — HDFC SmartBuy, Axis Travel Edge, SBI Card's travel portal — which run standing or frequent discounts on flight bookings that don't need the airline's own promotion to be active. SBI Card in particular bundles this with accelerated reward points on travel category spend, so the portal discount and the reward rate stack rather than compete.

Booking portal cashback

If you book through an aggregator rather than the airline directly, cashback cards can outperform travel-specific cards depending on the rate. Tata Neu Infinity Credit Card earns NeuCoins on flight bookings through the Tata Neu travel section, and Axis Bank Credit Card options on Travel Edge offer accelerated EDGE Miles that convert to airline miles at a fixed ratio — useful if you're already collecting a specific airline's miles, less useful if you fly different airlines depending on the route.

Compare this against a straightforward high cashback card: a flat 2-5% cashback on the booking amount is easy to calculate and doesn't depend on redeeming points at a favorable ratio later, which is where a lot of travel reward programs quietly lose value.

Which matters most for you

If you fly rarely, the convenience fee waiver and a decent cashback rate cover most of the saving — you don't need a dedicated travel card. If you fly often enough to hit milestone benefit thresholds or care about lounge access on the way, a travel-focused card with the accelerated multiplier is worth the annual fee; our guide to comparing credit cards walks through how to weigh that fee against your actual flight frequency.
