Best Credit Cards for Paying Rent in India
11 May 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

Rent is usually the single largest recurring expense most renters have, and third-party platforms like NoBroker, Cred, and RedGirraffe have made it possible to route rent through a credit card even when the landlord only accepts a bank transfer. Whether this is actually worth doing depends entirely on whether your card's reward rate beats the platform's processing fee.
The fee-vs-reward math
Rent payment platforms typically charge a processing fee of around 0.5-2% to route the payment to your landlord's bank account. For this to make sense financially, your card needs to earn a reward rate higher than that fee — otherwise you're paying to earn rewards, which defeats the purpose.
- If your card earns 1% flat cashback and the platform charges 1%, you're breaking even at best, with zero net gain.
- If your card earns 2-3% cashback or an equivalent value in points on general spend, and the fee is under 1%, the payment is genuinely worth making through the card.
Watch for reward exclusions
Several issuers explicitly exclude rent payment platforms, wallet loads, and similar categories from earning rewards altogether, even on cards that otherwise pay well on general spend. Check your card's terms and conditions for an "excluded merchant categories" list before assuming rent payments will earn anything at all.
Building credit history through consistent large payments
Beyond rewards, some renters use this route deliberately to keep utilization patterns healthy and build a longer track record of large, consistently-paid transactions — useful if you're trying to establish credit history or improve your score ahead of a future loan application. This only works if you pay off the statement in full each cycle; carrying a balance on rent-sized transactions gets expensive fast given typical credit card interest rates.
When it's not worth it
If your card doesn't offer meaningful rewards on this category, or the platform fee exceeds what you'd earn, it's simpler and cheaper to pay rent directly via bank transfer or UPI. The convenience of routing it through a card isn't worth a net loss every month.
Where to go from here
