Best Credit Cards for UPI Payments in India 2026

Credit card payments on UPI only work if the card is on the RuPay network — Visa and Mastercard aren't linked to UPI in India today. So the first filter isn't "which card has the best rewards," it's "which RuPay card exists that also rewards UPI spend well." Those are two different questions, and issuers often answer them differently.

Check whether UPI spend even earns rewards

This is the detail that catches people out. A card can look generous on paper — decent reward rate, no annual fee — but many issuers explicitly exclude UPI transactions from bonus categories or cap the reward rate on UPI spend lower than card-swipe spend. Some treat UPI transactions as a separate bucket entirely, earning a flat, lower rate regardless of merchant category. Before you make a RuPay card your default UPI payment method, check the card's terms for a line about "UPI transactions" or "P2M UPI spend" — it'll tell you the real rate, not the headline rate.

Which apps support RuPay credit card linking

Most major UPI apps now support linking a RuPay credit card as a payment source — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM all do, alongside your bank's own app. The linking process is the same as adding a bank account: you select "credit card" as the funding source and verify with your card details. Not every RuPay card is UPI-enabled by default, though — some older RuPay debit-only variants won't show up, so check with your issuer that your specific card is UPI-active before assuming it'll work at checkout.

Small daily spends work differently from card swipes

Paying a street vendor or small shop via UPI-linked credit card technically counts as a card transaction, but the merchant discount rate (MDR) and reward treatment can differ from a traditional swipe at a large retailer. Small merchants often use static QR codes without a card machine, and because UPI-credit transactions are relatively new infrastructure, some issuers flag high-frequency small-value UPI spend as lower priority for reward accrual compared to card-present transactions at bigger stores. This isn't universal, but it means you shouldn't assume every ₹50 UPI payment to a vendor earns the same reward as a ₹50 in-store card swipe.

What to actually look for

  • A RuPay variant from a major issuer (SBI, Axis, and others have started launching RuPay credit lines)
  • Confirmation that UPI spend earns at least the base reward rate, ideally without a cap
  • No hidden processing fee on UPI-credit transactions (some banks are testing small fees; check before you rely on this heavily)

If you're an SBI Card holder, check whether your variant has a RuPay option — SBI has been rolling these out, and linking it to UPI can be a decent way to consolidate small daily spending onto one card without losing rewards entirely.
