RuPay Credit Cards on UPI: How It Works and Which Cards Qualify

UPI was built around bank accounts and debit rails, so linking a credit card to it felt like a workaround for years. RuPay credit cards changed that — they can be linked directly inside a UPI app and used to scan-and-pay at any merchant that accepts UPI, which is now most of them. It's one of the more genuinely useful changes to hit Indian credit cards recently, and a lot of people still don't realize their card supports it.

How the linking actually works

Open a UPI app that supports credit card linking — most major apps do now — go to add a payment method, select "Credit Card," and choose RuPay. You'll verify the card and set a UPI PIN, after which the card shows up as a payment option for any QR scan or UPI ID payment, exactly like a bank account would. Only RuPay-network credit cards support this; Visa and Mastercard credit cards are not part of the UPI credit-card linkage program in India.

Which cards support it

Availability depends on both the card network (must be RuPay) and whether the issuing bank has enabled UPI linkage for that specific card — not every RuPay card from every bank is automatically eligible, so check with your issuer directly if you're not sure. SBI Card and several other major issuers have RuPay variants across parts of their lineup that support this; check our SBI credit cards guide for specifics on which cards to look at.

Why this matters for everyday spending

The obvious benefit is convenience — paying the neighborhood vegetable vendor or a small shop by scanning a QR code with your credit card, something that was impossible before. The less obvious benefit is that it opens up credit card rewards on transactions that used to only go through debit or cash, which can meaningfully shift where your reward points come from if you do a lot of small daily UPI payments. Merchant fees and surcharges can apply differently on RuPay UPI credit transactions versus a normal card swipe, so it's worth checking your card's terms if you plan to route a large volume of spending through this.

Choosing a card if this matters to you

If everyday UPI spending is a big part of your routine and you want to earn rewards on it, prioritize a RuPay card with UPI linkage over a Visa or Mastercard card that can't do this at all, even if the headline reward rate looks similar on paper. Compare this against our guide on best cashback credit cards to see how the reward structures stack up once you factor in UPI-based spending.
