How to Use a Credit Card With UPI QR Payments

What you need before you start

You need a RuPay credit card, since Visa and Mastercard credit cards can't be linked to UPI yet, and a UPI app that supports credit card linking. Not every app or every card issuer has rolled this out, so it's worth checking your bank's app or a major UPI app first before assuming it'll work.

Linking the card

Open the UPI app, go to the option for adding a payment instrument (usually labeled something like "add credit card" or "link RuPay card"), and enter your card details. The app verifies the card with your bank, and once approved, it shows up as a payment source alongside your regular bank accounts inside the same UPI app. You don't need a separate app for this; it just sits next to your bank account as another option to pay from.

Paying with it at a QR code

At checkout, open the UPI app, scan the merchant's QR code as usual, but before confirming the payment, switch the payment source from your bank account to your linked credit card. The transaction then goes through as a credit card charge (drawing from your credit limit and billing cycle) instead of debiting your bank account instantly. Everything else, the QR scan, the PIN or app confirmation, looks identical to a normal UPI payment, so it's easy to forget which source you're paying from if you don't check.

What the merchant needs to have enabled

Not every UPI QR code accepts credit-card-linked payments. The merchant's payment aggregator has to have credit-card-on-UPI enabled on their end. Many small merchants, especially ones using very basic UPI QR setups, haven't turned this on yet, so your card option may simply not appear or the payment may fail. If that happens, you'll need to fall back to your linked bank account or a physical card swipe.

Costs and limits to watch for

Unlike UPI payments from a bank account, credit card UPI payments can carry a merchant discount rate (MDR), a small fee the merchant pays to accept card payments. Some smaller merchants pass this cost on to the customer as a surcharge, so don't assume it's free just because it's a QR scan. Separately, banks can flag or cap unusually large UPI transactions on a credit card, since this is a newer payment rail and issuers are still tuning fraud and risk limits. If you're planning a large one-off payment, it's worth checking your card's UPI transaction limit or calling your bank first rather than finding out at the counter.
