Using a Credit Card for Wedding Expenses in India

Indian weddings routinely run into six or seven figures across catering, venues, jewellery, clothing, and travel for guests — which makes it one of the few life events where credit card strategy can save real money if you plan it even a little.

Spread spend across the right cards

Rather than putting the entire wedding budget on one card, splitting spend across two or three cards matched to categories works better: a jewellery-heavy purchase on a card with strong rewards on gold and jewellery merchants, catering and venue deposits on a high-spender card with milestone bonuses, and travel bookings for out-of-town guests on a travel rewards card. SBI Card and Axis Bank Credit Card both run cards with meaningfully different category strengths, so check which one lines up with your biggest line items before booking anything.

Watch for milestone bonuses

Several premium cards offer a lump-sum bonus once your spending crosses a threshold in a statement cycle or quarter — a wedding is exactly the kind of concentrated spending event that can trigger these, so it's worth checking your card's milestone terms before the big expenses land, and possibly timing large payments to fall inside the same cycle.

A word on EMI conversion

Big-ticket wedding vendors sometimes push EMI conversion at the point of sale. It's not free money — see our note on no-cost EMI traps — so only convert a large payment to EMI if the cash-flow benefit genuinely outweighs the processing fee, not just because it was offered.

Where to go from here
