How to Choose a Credit Card Based on Your Monthly Expenses
16 July 2025 · BestCard Editorial Team

Most people pick a credit card based on a friend's recommendation or a flashy welcome offer, then wonder six months later why the rewards never add up. The fix is boring but reliable: look at your actual money, not your memory.
Step 1: Pull your real statements
Open your last 2-3 months of bank statements and UPI app history. Not your mental estimate — the actual numbers. Sort every transaction into buckets: groceries, fuel, dining, online shopping, utility bills, and travel. This takes maybe 30 minutes and it is the single most useful thing you can do before applying for any card.
Step 2: Find your top two categories by rupee value
Here's where most people get it wrong. You might feel like dining out is your biggest expense because it's the most fun, but when you actually total the rupees, groceries or bill payments often quietly dominate. Rank your categories by total amount spent, not by how memorable or frequent the transactions felt. Your top two categories by value are what your card should be built around.
Step 3: Match categories to card type
Once you know your top two buckets, the card type mostly picks itself:
- If your spend is spread evenly across categories with no clear winner, a flat-rate cashback card is the simplest fit — no tracking required.
- If one or two categories dominate (say, groceries and utility bills), look for a card with category-accelerated rewards on exactly those buckets.
- If travel and hotel spend show up often, a travel-focused card with lounge access or airline miles will outperform a generic cashback card.
Step 4: Sanity-check the annual fee
An annual fee only makes sense if your spend volume clears it comfortably. If your monthly spend sits closer to ₹30,000, keep the fee modest and don't overpay for benefits you won't fully use — see our guide on best credit cards for ₹30,000 monthly spending for that tier. If you're consistently spending closer to ₹1 lakh a month, a higher annual fee card can pay for itself several times over through rewards and lounge access — check best credit cards for ₹1 lakh monthly spending for that range.
Step 5: Redo this every year
Spending patterns shift — a new job, a move, a kid, a new hobby all change where your money goes. What was the right card two years ago might be mismatched today. Set a yearly reminder to repeat this five-minute exercise. It costs nothing and it's the only way to know if you've outgrown your current card.
Where to go from here
If this is your first card, start with choosing your first credit card. If you already have one but suspect it's the wrong fit, compare it against options in best cashback credit cards in India.
