How to Link a RuPay Credit Card With UPI (Step by Step)
22 October 2025 · BestCard Editorial Team

If you already know your card qualifies (check our RuPay UPI guide if you're not sure), the actual linking process takes about two minutes and is nearly identical across GPay, PhonePe, and Paytm. Here's exactly what to tap.
Before you start
You need three things: a RuPay-network credit card (Visa and Mastercard credit cards cannot be linked to UPI in India — more on why below), the card in hand for the CVV and expiry, and a mobile number registered with your bank that matches the SIM in your phone, since OTP verification runs through that number.
Google Pay
Open GPay, tap your profile photo top-right, then "Payment methods," then "Add credit card." Select RuPay from the network list — if your card doesn't show up here, your issuer likely hasn't enabled UPI linkage for it yet. Enter the 16-digit card number, expiry, and CVV, then verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Set a UPI PIN for the card — this is separate from your card's ATM PIN — and it's ready to use for any QR scan or UPI ID payment.

PhonePe
In PhonePe, go to the home screen and tap "Credit Card" under the payment options grid, or navigate through your profile icon to "Payment Methods." Choose "Add Credit Card," pick RuPay, and enter the card details. PhonePe will pull the issuing bank automatically from the card number — confirm it's correct before proceeding. Complete OTP verification and set your UPI PIN the same way as GPay. One thing worth checking: PhonePe sometimes shows a card as "available to add" even before the bank has technically approved it for UPI use, so if the OTP step fails repeatedly, call your bank rather than retrying endlessly.
Paytm
Open Paytm, tap the UPI section or search "Add Credit Card" in the app's search bar, and select RuPay from the list of supported networks. Enter your card details, verify via OTP, and set a UPI PIN. Paytm's flow is functionally the same as the other two — the differences are cosmetic, not procedural.
What happens after linking
Once linked, your RuPay credit card appears as a payment source alongside your bank accounts whenever you scan a QR code or pay a UPI ID — you choose it manually at checkout unless you set it as default. Rewards accrue on these transactions the same way they would on a regular swipe, which is genuinely useful if you do a lot of small daily UPI payments and want them to count toward your card's rewards or milestone benefits instead of going through cash or debit.
Common linking problems
The most frequent failure is a card that simply isn't eligible — check with your issuer before assuming the app is broken. The second most common issue is a mismatched mobile number; if you changed your number recently and didn't update it with your bank, OTP verification will keep failing. Third, some banks cap UPI-linked credit limits differently from your regular credit limit, so if a payment gets declined despite available credit, that's worth asking your bank about directly.
