The Kotak Zen Signature is a good mid-tier card for people who eat out and shop online regularly and want some airport lounge access thrown in. It pays 4% on dining, 3% on online shopping and a solid 1.5% everywhere else, and its ₹1,500 fee is waived at ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend. It's not the cheapest way to earn on dining, but few cards at this price combine a 1.5% base rate with both domestic and international lounge visits.

Who this card is for

Zen Signature sits in Kotak's lineup between the entry-level League Platinum and the premium White card. It suits:

  • Salaried professionals earning ₹35,000 a month or more
  • People who spend ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 a month on restaurants and food delivery
  • Online shoppers who don't want to be tied to a single platform like Amazon or Flipkart
  • Occasional flyers who'd use a couple of lounge visits a quarter

It's less suited to heavy international travellers (3% forex markup) or anyone who wants simple cashback rather than points.

Fees and waiver

Item Detail
Joining fee ₹1,500
Annual fee ₹1,500
Fee waiver spend ₹1,50,000 a year
Forex markup 3%
Minimum monthly income ₹35,000

The ₹1.5 lakh waiver works out to ₹12,500 a month. If you're using Zen Signature as your main card, that's easy to hit. If you aren't, the fee plus 18% GST comes to ₹1,770 a year. Figures here are from BestCard's latest card data; Kotak updates terms periodically, so check its site before applying.

Reward structure

Category Reward rate Monthly cap
Dining 4% ₹1,000
Online shopping 3% ₹1,000
Everything else 1.5% None listed

Rewards come as points worth 25 paise each, so the percentages above are the effective rupee return BestCard calculates after point value.

The caps are generous for this tier. The dining cap is reached at ₹25,000 of dining spend a month (4% × ₹25,000 = ₹1,000), and the online cap at about ₹33,300 of online spend. Most people won't touch either.

Worked example: ₹30,000 a month

Split: ₹6,000 dining, ₹10,000 online shopping, ₹14,000 other spends (groceries, bills, fuel, offline shopping).

  • Dining: 4% of ₹6,000 = ₹240
  • Online: 3% of ₹10,000 = ₹300
  • Other: 1.5% of ₹14,000 = ₹210
  • Total: ₹750 a month, or ₹9,000 a year

Annual spend is ₹3.6 lakh, so the fee is waived. That's a strong return for a mid-tier card, and the 1.5% base rate does a lot of the work. Many competitors pay only 0.5% to 1% outside their bonus categories.

At ₹15,000 a month

Split: ₹3,000 dining, ₹5,000 online, ₹7,000 other: ₹120 + ₹150 + ₹105 = ₹375 a month, or ₹4,500 a year. Annual spend is ₹1.8 lakh, still above the waiver threshold.

Lounge, travel and other benefits

  • Domestic lounges: 2 complimentary visits per quarter, or 8 a year
  • International lounges: 3 complimentary visits per calendar year through Priority Pass, primary cardholder only
  • Fuel: 1% surcharge waiver, capped at ₹250 per billing cycle
  • Forex markup: 3%, slightly lower than the 3.5% common on entry cards

The international lounge allowance is small, but it's unusual at a ₹1,500 fee. If you fly abroad once or twice a year, three visits will cover you. For more on how these memberships work, see our Priority Pass explainer.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • 1.5% base rate is high for a mid-tier card
  • 4% on dining and 3% on online shopping, with generous ₹1,000 monthly caps
  • Both domestic (8/year) and international (3/year) lounge access
  • Fee waiver at ₹1.5 lakh is achievable for regular users
  • Online rate isn't restricted to a single platform

Cons

  • Rewards are points at 25 paise, not direct cashback
  • 3% forex markup is still costly for frequent travellers
  • International lounge visits are for the primary cardholder only
  • Visa Signature perks aren't as broad as premium-tier cards

Eligibility

BestCard's data lists a minimum monthly income of ₹35,000. Kotak typically wants a good credit score and stable income proof. Existing Kotak salary or savings account customers may find approval easier, though that isn't guaranteed. If you've been declined before, read our guide on improving approval chances.

How it compares

IDFC FIRST Select: lifetime free with 4% on dining and travel and 0% forex markup, but a 0.5% base rate and a higher ₹1 lakh monthly income requirement. Its lounge access (1 domestic visit a quarter) is spend-gated at ₹20,000 in the previous month. Better if you travel abroad and want no fee; worse for general spending.

HDFC Millennia: ₹1,000 fee waived at ₹1 lakh, with 5% on listed online merchants (capped at ₹1,000/month) and 2.5% on groceries, but only 1% on dining and everything else. Its lounge benefit is one voucher a quarter after ₹1 lakh of quarterly spend. Better for Amazon and Flipkart shoppers; Zen wins for diners and on base rate.

Kotak White: Kotak's premium step up at ₹3,000 a year (waived at ₹5 lakh), with 8 domestic and 4 international lounge visits a year. It's aimed at much higher earners, with BestCard's data showing a ₹2,08,333 monthly income bar. Only worth considering if you spend well above ₹40,000 a month.

Verdict

The Kotak Zen Signature is a well-balanced card for mid-income professionals who dine out and shop online. At ₹30,000 a month it returns about ₹9,000 a year with the fee waived, and you get eight domestic and three international lounge visits on top. Its main weakness is that rewards are points rather than cash, and the 3% forex markup rules it out as a travel card.

If your spending is mostly on Amazon or Flipkart, a co-branded cashback card will earn more. If it's spread across restaurants, varied online stores and everyday bills, Zen Signature is one of the better all-rounders at its price.
