How to Redeem Credit Card Reward Points Without Losing Value

Reward points are one of the most overstated benefits in credit cards, mostly because the redemption options aren't equal — the same points can be worth three or four times more through one option than another. Earning points is only half the equation; redeeming them well is the part most people skip.

Why redemption options aren't equal

Most issuers let you redeem points for statement credit, merchandise catalogs, vouchers, or travel bookings and airline miles transfers. Statement credit and catalog redemptions are almost always the worst value — issuers price catalog items and cash conversions well below what the points cost to earn, sometimes at half the value you'd get elsewhere. Travel redemptions, especially airline or hotel transfer partners, are typically where points are worth the most, since airlines value miles higher than banks value points in cash terms.

Work out your points' actual cash value

Before redeeming, divide whatever cash-equivalent value you're being offered by the number of points required — that gives you a real rate per point. Compare that rate against what the same points are worth through a travel transfer partner. If a points-to-cash conversion gives you a rate a fraction of the travel conversion rate, redeeming for cash is effectively throwing away most of the value you earned.

Where structure beats point value entirely

This is exactly the problem the Tata Neu Infinity Credit Card sidesteps — NeuCoins are worth a flat ₹1 each and redeem directly at Tata Neu partner brands with no conversion table to decode or devalue. If a chunk of your spending already flows through Tata Group brands, this removes the redemption guesswork entirely, since there's no "bad" redemption option to accidentally pick. You can check current terms through the Tata Neu Infinity application page.

Watch expiry dates

Reward points commonly expire two to three years after being earned, and issuers rarely send a prominent warning before they lapse. Check your points balance and expiry dates at least once or twice a year, especially if you hold a card you don't use often — points that expire unredeemed are the cleanest way to lose value with zero benefit.
