RuPay Lounge Access Update: What Platinum and Select Cardholders Need to Know
1 June 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

RuPay has spent the last few years closing the perks gap with Visa and Mastercard, and lounge access is one of the areas where that catch-up effort is most visible — and most misunderstood. A growing number of Indian cardholders now hold a RuPay Select or RuPay Platinum card without realizing the network itself, separate from their issuing bank, adds a lounge benefit on top.
Two separate layers of lounge access
On a RuPay card, you can have lounge access from two independent sources stacked on top of each other: the network-level benefit that RuPay itself provides to Select and Platinum tier cards, and whatever additional lounge program your issuing bank has bolted on for that specific card product. These are not the same allocation — a bank-level benefit running out doesn't affect your RuPay network entitlement, and vice versa. Cardholders who only check one of the two often conclude they have less access than they actually do.
What RuPay Select and Platinum actually cover
RuPay's own program typically provides a fixed number of complimentary domestic lounge visits per quarter or per year, usable at a defined list of partner lounges across major Indian airports — generally a shorter list than what a global Priority Pass membership would cover, and almost entirely domestic rather than international. The visit cap and eligible lounge list are set at the network level, meaning they apply the same way regardless of which bank issued your specific RuPay card, though individual banks can add more on top.
Where it falls short of Visa and Mastercard
International coverage is the clearest gap. RuPay's lounge network is overwhelmingly domestic, so cardholders who travel internationally on a RuPay-issued card generally can't rely on the network's own program abroad — they're dependent entirely on whatever separate international benefit their specific card and bank provide, which for RuPay-based cards is often thinner than the Visa or Mastercard equivalent tier. If international lounge access matters to you, check whether your bank has added a supplementary Priority Pass-style benefit rather than assuming RuPay's network alone will cover it.
How to check your actual entitlement
Log into your issuing bank's app and look for a benefits or "card perks" section — most banks now list the RuPay network benefit and their own bank-level benefit as separate line items rather than merging them, precisely because the eligibility rules and visit caps differ. If you hold an SBI RuPay card, for instance, the SBI Card benefits page breaks these out explicitly.
Where this fits in the bigger lounge access picture
RuPay's push into lounge benefits is part of a broader shift where nearly every network and bank is redesigning how lounge access gets granted, gated, and tracked — see our explainer on network-level perks from Visa, Mastercard, and Diners Club for how the other two major networks structure the same idea, and our piece on quarterly spend triggers if your RuPay card's bank-level benefit is spend-gated on top of the network entitlement.
Frequently asked questions
Do all RuPay credit cards get lounge access?
No — only cards issued on the RuPay Select and RuPay Platinum tiers carry lounge benefits; basic RuPay cards do not.
Does RuPay lounge access work the same as Visa or Mastercard lounge access?
Not exactly. RuPay runs its own program with a separate visit cap and a narrower domestic lounge list, layered underneath whatever your issuing bank additionally offers.
