HSBC TravelOne and ICICI Sapphiro are two mid-tier travel cards that both charge 3.5% forex and both run on Mastercard. The difference is in how they pay you. TravelOne is a miles card: a 2% listed base rate and a 1:1 conversion to airline miles. Sapphiro is a perks card: a thin 0.5% base rate, but a big welcome voucher pack, golf, milestones and a ₹3 crore air accident cover. Heavy spenders who fly will find TravelOne earns more. People who want the extras and can meet the spend gates may prefer Sapphiro.

How the rewards actually work

HSBC TravelOne

HSBC TravelOne lists a 2% base rate and 4% on travel. Points convert 1:1 into miles on 14+ partner airlines, including Air India, Singapore Airlines and British Airways. Our data gives no rupee value per point, so the 2% is a nominal rate; what a mile is worth depends on the airline and route you redeem for. The card also offers 15% off flight and hotel bookings on Yatra, EaseMyTrip, Paytm and Cleartrip.

ICICI Sapphiro

ICICI Sapphiro earns 0.5% on most spends, with points worth 25 paise. Redemption for statement credit or ICICI's own catalogue vouchers is free; select third-party catalogue items cost ₹99 plus GST per request. Value comes from milestones instead: 4,000 bonus points at ₹4 lakh of annual spend, plus 2,000 points for each extra ₹1 lakh, capped at 20,000 points a year.

Worked example 1: ₹50,000 a month

Annual spend ₹6 lakh, no special travel category spend. I use the listed base rates.

HSBC TravelOne

  • 2% × ₹6,00,000 = ₹12,000 nominal
  • Less ₹4,999 fee (₹6 lakh is below the ₹8 lakh waiver)
  • Net: about ₹7,001, if a point is worth ₹1

ICICI Sapphiro

  • 0.5% × ₹6,00,000 = ₹3,000
  • Milestone: 4,000 points at ₹4 lakh, plus 2 × 2,000 for ₹5 lakh and ₹6 lakh = 8,000 points × 25 paise = ₹2,000
  • ₹6 lakh just meets the waiver, so no ₹3,500 fee (if it falls short, deduct ₹3,500)
  • Net: ₹5,000, or ₹1,500 if the fee applies

TravelOne is ahead on paper, but only if a point is worth about ₹1 to you. At 50 paise it would earn ₹6,000, less the fee, which is ₹1,001 and below Sapphiro.

Worked example 2: ₹1,00,000 a month

Annual spend ₹12 lakh.

HSBC TravelOne

  • 2% × ₹12,00,000 = ₹24,000 nominal
  • ₹12 lakh clears the ₹8 lakh waiver, so no fee
  • Net: about ₹24,000 at ₹1 a point, ₹12,000 at 50 paise

ICICI Sapphiro

  • 0.5% × ₹12,00,000 = ₹6,000
  • Milestone: 4,000 + 8 × 2,000 = 20,000 points, which hits the cap = ₹5,000
  • Fee waived
  • Net: ₹11,000

At this level TravelOne wins comfortably unless you value its points under 46 paise. Sapphiro's welcome vouchers worth over ₹13,000 only appear in year one, so they do not change the repeat-year picture.

Lounge access and travel

TravelOne is simpler: 6 domestic and 4 international LoungeKey visits a year, with no spend condition listed. Sapphiro looks bigger, with 4 domestic visits a quarter, but only if you spent ₹75,000 in the previous calendar quarter, and it counts the primary cardholder only. It gives just 2 international visits a year. If you spend less than ₹25,000 a month, Sapphiro's domestic lounges will rarely unlock.

Sapphiro adds up to 4 golf rounds or lessons a month (tied to ₹50,000 of monthly spend), BookMyShow or INOX buy-one-get-one twice a month on ₹25,000 of quarterly spend, a ₹3 crore air accident cover and a 24/7 concierge. TravelOne adds portal discounts. Both charge 3.5% on forex, so for trips abroad see our list of low forex markup cards and our international lounge guide.

Fees and waivers

TravelOne's ₹4,999 fee is waived at ₹8 lakh a year, about ₹66,700 a month. Sapphiro costs ₹6,500 to join and ₹3,500 a year after that, waived at ₹6 lakh, or ₹50,000 a month. Year-one welcome offers soften both: TravelOne gives ₹1,000 cashback, a ₹3,000 PostCard voucher and 3 months of EazyDiner Prime on ₹25,000 spent within 30 days. Sapphiro gives vouchers worth over ₹13,000 (Tata CliQ, EaseMyTrip, Da Milano, Croma, EazyDiner Prime) on paying the joining fee. Sapphiro's welcome offer is much richer. Its income bar is also higher, at ₹75,000 against ₹50,000.

Who should pick which

Choose HSBC TravelOne if:

  • You want miles on airlines such as Air India or Singapore Airlines
  • You spend ₹66,700 or more a month and can waive the fee
  • You prefer lounge visits without a prior-quarter spend test
  • Your income is nearer ₹50,000 than ₹75,000

Choose ICICI Sapphiro if:

  • You want the ₹13,000+ welcome vouchers in year one
  • You can spend ₹75,000 a quarter and use golf or BOGO movie offers
  • You like ₹3 crore of air accident cover
  • You will redeem for statement credit or ICICI vouchers

Verdict

For ongoing earning, HSBC TravelOne is the better card, with the caveat that its value depends on how you redeem miles. ICICI Sapphiro is a good first-year deal because of its vouchers, but its 0.5% base rate holds it back after that. If neither feels right, our best travel credit cards with lounge access list covers other options.
