ICICI Sapphiro vs Axis Atlas 2026: Which Travel Card Wins?
23 October 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

ICICI Sapphiro and Axis Atlas both sell themselves to travellers, but they are built differently. Axis Atlas is a miles card: 2% on everything and 5% on travel, with lounge visits that grow as you spend. ICICI Sapphiro is a perks card: a thin 0.5% reward rate wrapped in welcome vouchers, golf rounds, BookMyShow offers and quarterly lounge visits. If you care about what the card earns, Atlas wins comfortably. If you care about the extras and can clear the spend gates, Sapphiro still has a case.

How the rewards actually work
ICICI Sapphiro
ICICI Sapphiro earns a base of 0.5% on spends, with utilities at a lower 0.25%. That is low for a card with a ₹3,500 fee. The real earning comes from milestones: 4,000 bonus points at ₹4,00,000 of annual spend, then 2,000 more for every extra ₹1,00,000, capped at 20,000 points a year. At ₹0.25 a point, that cap is worth ₹5,000. Redeeming for statement credit or ICICI's own catalogue vouchers is free, while select third-party catalogue items cost ₹99 plus GST per request.
Axis Atlas
Axis Atlas earns 2% on general spends and 5% on travel bookings through the Travel EDGE portal, direct airlines and direct hotels. Milestone miles add 2,500 at ₹3,00,000, a further 2,500 at ₹7,50,000 and a further 5,000 at ₹15,00,000, up to 10,000 a year. Tier anniversary miles of 2,500 (Silver and Gold) or 5,000 (Platinum) come on top. Miles transfer to partner airline and hotel programmes at no fee, and our data values an EDGE Mile at ₹0.20.
Worked example 1: ₹50,000 a month
Split: ₹10,000 on travel, ₹40,000 on everything else. Annual spend ₹6,00,000.
ICICI Sapphiro
- Base: 0.5% × ₹50,000 = ₹250 a month, ₹3,000 a year
- Milestones: 4,000 points at ₹4 lakh, plus 2,000 at ₹5 lakh and 2,000 at ₹6 lakh = 8,000 points × ₹0.25 = ₹2,000
- Total: ₹5,000 a year
- ₹6 lakh just meets the waiver, so no annual fee
Axis Atlas
- Travel: 5% × ₹10,000 = ₹500 a month, ₹6,000 a year
- Other: 2% × ₹40,000 = ₹800 a month, ₹9,600 a year
- Milestone: 2,500 miles at ₹3 lakh × ₹0.20 = ₹500
- Total: ₹16,100 a year, less the ₹5,000 fee = ₹11,100 net
Atlas still comes out about ₹6,100 ahead after its larger fee.

Worked example 2: ₹1,00,000 a month
Split: ₹25,000 on travel, ₹75,000 on everything else. Annual spend ₹12,00,000.
ICICI Sapphiro
- Base: 0.5% × ₹1,00,000 = ₹500 a month, ₹6,000 a year
- Milestones: 4,000 points at ₹4 lakh plus 2,000 for each lakh from ₹5 lakh to ₹12 lakh (8 steps, 16,000 points) = 20,000 points, which is exactly the yearly cap = ₹5,000
- Total: ₹11,000 a year, no annual fee
Axis Atlas
- Travel: 5% × ₹25,000 = ₹1,250 a month
- Other: 2% × ₹75,000 = ₹1,500 a month
- Monthly ₹2,750, or ₹33,000 a year
- Milestones: 2,500 at ₹3 lakh plus 2,500 at ₹7.5 lakh = 5,000 miles × ₹0.20 = ₹1,000
- Total: ₹34,000 a year, less ₹5,000 fee = ₹29,000 net
The gap widens to ₹18,000 a year. Sapphiro's flat base rate simply cannot keep up once spending grows. Atlas also unlocks its Gold tier at ₹7.5 lakh, which lifts lounge visits, and that is not counted above.
Lounge access and travel
Sapphiro's domestic offer is good on paper: 4 visits per quarter, or up to 16 a year, but only if you spent ₹75,000 in the previous calendar quarter, and for the primary cardholder only. International access is just 2 visits a year through Priority Pass or DreamFolks.
Atlas flips that. It starts at 8 domestic and 4 international visits at Silver, then rises to 12 and 6 at Gold (₹7,50,000 spend) and 18 and 12 at Platinum (₹15,00,000). If you fly abroad a few times a year, Atlas gives you more international visits and the 5% travel rate. Sapphiro also adds up to 4 complimentary golf rounds or lessons a month tied to ₹50,000 monthly spend, a ₹3 crore air accident cover and BookMyShow buy-one-get-one offers twice a month on ₹25,000 of quarterly spend.
On foreign spending, both cards charge a 3.5% forex markup, so on ₹1,00,000 abroad you pay ₹3,500 on either. Our data notes that several competing travel cards charge 1.5 to 2%. Our forex markup by bank guide shows better options.
Fees and waivers
Sapphiro costs ₹6,500 to join and ₹3,500 a year after that, but the fee drops away at ₹6,00,000 of annual spend, about ₹50,000 a month. It also comes with welcome vouchers worth over ₹13,000 (Tata CliQ, EaseMyTrip, Da Milano, Croma, EazyDiner Prime) on payment of the joining fee, credited within 45 days, which can cover much of the first-year cost.
Atlas is ₹5,000 to join and ₹5,000 every year, with no spend-based waiver in our data. Its welcome benefit is 2,500 EDGE Miles on the first transaction within 37 days, worth about ₹500. Atlas therefore needs rewards of well over ₹5,000 a year to pay for itself, which it clears at ₹50,000 a month in the example above but not at very low spend.
Who should pick which
Choose ICICI Sapphiro if:
- You can spend at least ₹75,000 every quarter and want the 4 domestic lounge visits
- You will use the golf rounds, BookMyShow offers and concierge
- You want the welcome voucher pack to offset the joining fee
- You prefer Mastercard
Choose Axis Atlas if:
- You book flights and hotels often and can use the Travel EDGE portal
- You want a real reward rate: 2% on everything and 5% on travel
- You want more international lounge visits, rising with spend
- You can accept a ₹5,000 fee that never gets waived
Verdict
For most travellers, Axis Atlas is the better card because it actually earns. Even after its higher fee, it beats Sapphiro by about ₹6,100 a year at ₹50,000 a month and ₹18,000 at ₹1,00,000. Sapphiro is worth keeping only if the vouchers, golf and quarterly domestic lounge visits matter more to you than the reward rate. If you pick it, treat the 0.5% base rate as a cost, not a feature.
