If you care most about rewards, HDFC Infinia wins clearly. Its 3.33% base rate on points worth up to ₹1 each is more than three times what SBI Card AURUM returns. Aurum's case is different. It bundles memberships worth real money, four movie tickets a month and unlimited international lounge access. That works best for people who'd use those perks and don't want to manage points.

Rewards maths

Aurum earns 1% (4 points per ₹100 at 25 paise). Infinia earns 3.33% (5 points per ₹150) when you redeem at ₹1 a point. You get that value on HDFC's best redemptions, mainly flights and hotels through SmartBuy. Lower-value redemptions earn less.

Example 1: ₹75,000 a month (₹9 lakh a year)

SBI Aurum

  • ₹75,000 × 1% = ₹750 a month, or ₹9,000 a year
  • Fee not waived (under ₹12 lakh). Net of ₹9,999: about –₹999

HDFC Infinia

  • ₹75,000 × 3.33% = about ₹2,500 a month, or about ₹29,970 a year
  • Fee not waived (under ₹10 lakh). Net of ₹12,500: about ₹17,470

Example 2: ₹1.5 lakh a month (₹18 lakh a year)

SBI Aurum

  • ₹1.5 lakh × 1% = ₹1,500 a month, or ₹18,000 a year
  • Fee waived (above ₹12 lakh). Net: ₹18,000

HDFC Infinia

  • ₹1.5 lakh × 3.33% = about ₹4,995 a month, or about ₹59,940 a year
  • Fee waived (above ₹10 lakh). Net: about ₹59,940

Infinia's lead grows further if you book travel on SmartBuy. Its travel rate goes up to 16.65%, but it's capped monthly, so check HDFC's current SmartBuy caps before you count on it. Our explainer on SmartBuy and reward portals shows how the multipliers work.

Where Aurum fights back: perks

On points alone Aurum loses badly. Its value is in the extras:

  • Movie tickets: 4 tickets worth ₹1,000 each every month on BookMyShow. If you'd really use all four, that's up to ₹48,000 a year in face value. If you watch one film a month, count closer to ₹12,000.
  • Memberships: Club Marriott for a year, WSJ and Mint digital subscriptions, and an Inflection Point Ventures angel-investing membership that SBI values at about ₹29,382. These only count if you'd have paid for them anyway.
  • Welcome points: 40,000 points worth about ₹10,000, roughly the joining fee.

Someone who uses all of these can get a lot from Aurum even on modest card spend. Someone who doesn't is left with a 1% card that costs ₹9,999.

Lounge access and travel

Both cards give unlimited international lounge access at more than 1,000 lounges. The difference is at home:

  • Infinia: unlimited domestic lounge access, and add-on cardholders get it too. That matters for couples and families flying together.
  • Aurum: 4 domestic visits per quarter, which is 16 a year. A frequent domestic flyer could run out.

Forex is effectively the same: 1.99% on Aurum and 2% on Infinia. Infinia also adds unlimited golf, which Aurum doesn't have. Our guide to truly unlimited lounge access cards compares these programmes in more detail.

Fees, waivers and getting the card

Aurum is cheaper to hold (₹9,999 against ₹12,500), but its waiver bar is higher (₹12 lakh against ₹10 lakh). Both welcome bonuses roughly cover the joining fee in points.

Getting either card is hard. Both are largely issued by invitation or to existing high-value customers. BestCard's data lists minimum incomes of ₹3.3 lakh a month for Aurum and ₹5 lakh for Infinia. If you already bank with SBI and hold a high-limit SBI card, ask your relationship manager about SBI Card AURUM. Our explainer on invite-only credit cards covers how invitations usually come about.

Who should pick which

Pick HDFC Infinia if:

  • you spend ₹75,000 or more a month and want the highest return on it,
  • you book flights and hotels and will redeem through SmartBuy,
  • you fly domestically often, or with an add-on cardholder,
  • you play golf.

Pick SBI Aurum if:

  • you'd actually use four movie tickets a month and the bundled memberships,
  • you already have a strong SBI relationship and no realistic path to Infinia,
  • you want unlimited international lounges with simple, low-effort perks.

Verdict

For almost anyone who spends heavily on their card, HDFC Infinia is the better card. At ₹1.5 lakh a month it returns roughly ₹40,000 more a year than Aurum before you count any perks. SBI Aurum makes sense as a perks card for SBI loyalists who'll use the movie tickets and memberships. It isn't a points card.
