Credit Card Reward Portals Explained: SmartBuy vs Travel EDGE
16 September 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

Credit card reward portals like HDFC SmartBuy and Axis Travel EDGE are bank-run booking sites where you earn extra points, miles or cashback for booking travel and shopping through them. On the right card, a portal booking can earn several times the normal reward rate. On the wrong card, or at an inflated price, it earns you nothing extra. Here is how they work and which cards get the most out of them.
How a reward portal works
A bank builds or partners with a booking platform, then pays cardholders accelerated rewards for routing spend through it. The bank earns commission from the airline, hotel or voucher partner and shares part of it with you as bonus points. That's why the multiplier is limited to the portal: the same flight booked directly on the airline's site earns only your card's base rate.
Portals usually do two separate jobs:
- Earning. You pay with your card on the portal and earn a multiplier, such as 5X or 10X points, often subject to a monthly cap.
- Redeeming. You spend points on the portal for flights or hotels at a fixed value per point, which is usually better than statement credit.
Keep the two apart in your head. A card can be good for earning on a portal and poor for redeeming there, or the other way round.
HDFC SmartBuy
SmartBuy is the portal for HDFC credit cards. In BestCard's data, these are the cards where it makes a clear difference:
- HDFC Infinia earns up to 10X reward points on hotel bookings and 5X on flights through SmartBuy, subject to a monthly cap. With a base reward rate of 3.33% and a point value of ₹1, the travel category rate in our data is 16.65%. A separate, lower monthly cap applies to points earned on SmartBuy vouchers.
- HDFC Diners Club Black leans heavily on SmartBuy for travel redemption value and shares the 3.33% base rate at ₹1 per point.
- HDFC Regalia Gold redeems points for flights and hotels on SmartBuy at ₹0.50 each, covering up to 70% of a booking and up to 50,000 points a month. Since 15 May 2026, its Boarding Edge benefit also lets you upload a boarding pass on SmartBuy to pick 2 perks a quarter, such as a spa visit or an Uber airport transfer.
- HDFC IRCTC adds 5% SmartBuy cashback on train ticket bookings, capped at ₹1,000 a month, on top of a 1% IRCTC transaction charge waiver.
- HDFC Pixel Go offers up to 5% cashback on SmartBuy bookings against a flat 1% elsewhere.
A worked SmartBuy example
Say you book a ₹20,000 hotel stay on SmartBuy with Infinia. At the base 3.33%, that earns roughly ₹666 in value. At the 16.65% travel rate in our data, it earns about ₹3,330, as long as you're under that month's cap. The extra ₹2,664 is the portal's real payoff. If the same hotel costs ₹21,500 on SmartBuy but ₹20,000 directly, you're paying ₹1,500 more for a ₹2,664 gain. Still positive, but by less than the headline suggests.
On Regalia Gold, the redemption side matters more. 10,000 points used on SmartBuy flights are worth ₹5,000 at ₹0.50 each. The same points as statement credit are worth at most ₹0.20 each, or ₹2,000. Same points, ₹3,000 difference.

Axis Travel EDGE
Travel EDGE is the Axis Bank equivalent, built around EDGE Miles that transfer to airline and hotel loyalty programmes.
- Axis Atlas earns 5% in accelerated EDGE Miles on flight and hotel bookings via Travel EDGE, against a 2% base rate, and miles transfer to 20+ airline and hotel partners. The fee is ₹5,000 with no spend waiver. See the Atlas card page and our 2026 Atlas review.
- Axis Horizon earns 5x EDGE Miles on Travel EDGE and airline bookings, with 1:1 transfers to KrisFlyer, Marriott Bonvoy and Accor. The fee is ₹3,000, waived on ₹3.5 lakh.
- Axis Olympus transfers 1 EDGE Mile to 4 partner points on many Travel EDGE routes.
- Axis Magnus earns 12 points per ₹200 at base (4.8% in our data) and 12% on travel, at 20 paise a point when transferred.
A worked Travel EDGE example
Book ₹30,000 of flights through Travel EDGE on Axis Atlas. At 5%, that's ₹1,500 of value in EDGE Miles, against ₹600 at the 2% base rate if booked directly. The ₹900 difference is the portal benefit. Whether a mile is actually worth what our data assumes depends on the partner you transfer to, so check transfer ratios before you commit.
Portal vs direct: when it pays off
The portal wins when three things line up: the price is the same or close to direct, you're below the monthly accelerated cap, and you'll redeem the points at a good value. Lose any one of these and the edge shrinks fast.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Final price vs airline/hotel site | Portal prices can carry a markup that eats the bonus |
| Monthly accelerated cap | Points beyond the cap usually earn base rate |
| Cancellation terms | Portal refunds can take longer than direct |
| Loyalty credit | Some hotel stays booked via portals may not earn hotel points |
| Redemption value | Points spent on statement credit are often worth far less |
Our guide on calculating the real value of reward points walks through the maths for any card.
Common mistakes
- Chasing the multiplier after the cap. Once you've hit the monthly limit, further portal bookings earn little extra.
- Ignoring the price gap. A 10X headline means little if the room costs 8% more on the portal.
- Redeeming for cash. On Regalia Gold, statement credit is worth up to ₹0.20 a point against ₹0.50 on SmartBuy travel.
- Assuming every card gets the bonus. Only specific cards earn accelerated portal points. Check your own card's terms.
The portal rates and caps above reflect BestCard's latest card data. Banks revise them often, so check the current terms on HDFC's and Axis Bank's sites before booking anything large.
The bottom line
SmartBuy and Travel EDGE are worth using if you hold a card built for them, like Infinia, Diners Club Black, Regalia Gold, Atlas or Horizon, and you compare prices every time.
