There are three main ways to earn Marriott Bonvoy points and benefits with Indian credit cards: the Marriott Bonvoy HDFC Bank Card, which earns Bonvoy points directly and gives a Free Night Award every year; bank reward points that transfer to Bonvoy, such as Axis EDGE Miles; and premium cards that give Marriott elite status, like the Amex Platinum Charge. Which one makes sense depends on how often you stay at Marriott properties and whether you want to be tied to one hotel group.

It also helps to know what doesn't earn Bonvoy points, because a lot of Indian premium cards advertise "Marriott" benefits that are really something else.

Bonvoy points vs Club Marriott: clear this up first

Marriott Bonvoy is Marriott's worldwide loyalty programme, covering brands like JW Marriott, Westin, Sheraton, W, Courtyard and Ritz-Carlton. You earn points on stays and partner spends, redeem them for free nights, and build elite status (Silver, Gold, Platinum and above) through nights stayed.

Club Marriott is a separate paid membership in the Asia-Pacific region that gives discounts on dining and some stays at participating Marriott hotels. It doesn't earn Bonvoy points or elite nights.

In BestCard's data, cards like HDFC Infinia (first year), HDFC Diners Club Black, Kotak White Reserve and SBI Aurum include Club Marriott. That's a useful dining perk if you eat at Marriott restaurants, but it's not a route to free nights.

Route 1: the Marriott Bonvoy HDFC Bank Card

The Marriott Bonvoy HDFC Bank Card is the only Indian card that earns Bonvoy points natively.

Feature Detail
Joining and annual fee ₹3,000 each
Free Night Award Up to 15,000 Bonvoy points on joining and on every renewal
Extra Free Night Awards At ₹6 lakh, ₹9 lakh and ₹15 lakh of annual spend
Status Complimentary Silver Elite, plus 10 Elite Night Credits a year
Earn rates (value back) 0.67% base, 1.33% on dining, 2.67% on travel
Lounge access 12 domestic and 12 international visits a year
Forex markup 3.5%
Minimum income ₹1,00,000 a month

Worked example

BestCard values a Bonvoy point at 50 paise. A Free Night Award worth up to 15,000 points is therefore worth up to about ₹7,500, against a fee of ₹3,540 including GST. The renewal night alone more than pays for the card, if you can use it at a property priced within the 15,000-point limit.

Now add spend. If you put ₹50,000 a month (₹6 lakh a year) on the card, you unlock a second Free Night Award at the ₹6 lakh milestone, worth up to another ₹7,500. Your base earn on ₹6 lakh at 0.67% adds around ₹4,000 in points. That's roughly ₹19,000 of value for a ₹3,540 fee, plus lounge access, if you stay at Marriott hotels.

The 10 Elite Night Credits are a head start toward Gold Elite, which Marriott awards after 25 qualifying nights a year. Our full Marriott Bonvoy HDFC card review covers the details.

The weak spots: a 0.67% base rate is low for general spending, and the 3.5% forex markup makes it a poor card to use abroad, even at Marriott hotels overseas. Keep a low-forex card for foreign bills.

Route 2: transfer bank points to Bonvoy

If you don't want a single-hotel card, flexible points give you a choice between airlines and hotels at redemption time.

Axis Horizon and the EDGE Miles family

In BestCard's data, Axis Horizon EDGE Miles transfer 1:1 to Marriott Bonvoy, alongside Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Accor. The card costs ₹3,000 a year (waived at ₹3.5 lakh of spend), earns at a 5% rate on travel and 2% base, and includes domestic and international lounge access. Apply for Axis Horizon if you want hotel and airline flexibility on a mid-range fee.

Axis Atlas uses the same EDGE Miles currency and Travel EDGE transfer platform with 20+ partners. Check the current partner list and ratio for Marriott on Travel EDGE before you redeem, as Axis has revised its transfer terms several times. Our reward portal explainer covers how SmartBuy and Travel EDGE work.

HDFC and Amex points

HDFC's top cards and Amex Membership Rewards have both offered hotel transfer partners over the years, but partner lists and ratios change. Before earning points with Bonvoy in mind, check the current list on HDFC SmartBuy or the Amex Membership Rewards site. If Marriott isn't there, airline miles are usually the better use of those points. See our points-to-miles transfer guide for the basics.

Is transferring worth it?

Bonvoy uses dynamic pricing, so the points needed for a night vary by hotel, season and date. Transfers make sense when you have a specific stay in mind and the cash rate is high. Never transfer speculatively: points can't be moved back, and a devaluation or pricing change can cut their value overnight. Marriott's award stays typically make the fifth consecutive night free on standard redemptions, which improves value on longer trips.

Route 3: Marriott elite status through a card

The American Express Platinum Charge gives complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status (along with Hilton Honors Gold and Taj Epicure). Gold Elite brings perks like late checkout, bonus points on stays and room upgrades subject to availability. At a ₹66,000 annual fee, it's a card for frequent premium travellers who value status across several hotel groups, not a cheap shortcut to Marriott perks.

Which route suits you

  • You stay at Marriott properties a few times a year: the HDFC co-brand. The annual Free Night Award covers the fee, and Silver Elite plus 10 night credits help on paid stays.
  • You want flexibility between airlines and hotels: Axis Horizon or another EDGE Miles card, transferring to Bonvoy only when a specific redemption looks good.
  • You're a frequent premium traveller: Amex Platinum Charge for Gold Elite, used alongside a points-earning card.
  • You mostly eat at Marriott restaurants in India: a card with Club Marriott, understanding it won't earn Bonvoy points.

Also consider Accor if you stay at Novotel, Pullman or Sofitel. Our guide to Accor Live Limitless transfers covers that side. For all hotel co-brands in one place, see co-branded hotel credit cards in India.

Figures in this guide reflect BestCard's latest card data, and both banks and Marriott change terms often, so verify on the issuer's site before applying.

The bottom line

The Marriott Bonvoy HDFC card is the simplest way to earn Bonvoy points from India, and its annual Free Night Award does most of the work. Flexible EDGE Miles suit people who want options, and the Amex Platinum Charge is for those who want status across hotel groups. Not sure which fits your travel? Frequently asked questions

Which Indian credit card is best for Marriott Bonvoy points?

The Marriott Bonvoy HDFC Bank Card is the most direct route: it earns Bonvoy points, gives a Free Night Award worth up to 15,000 points on joining and renewal, and includes Silver Elite status. For flexible points, Axis Horizon's EDGE Miles transfer 1:1 to Marriott Bonvoy in BestCard's data.

Is Club Marriott the same as Marriott Bonvoy?

No. Marriott Bonvoy is Marriott's global loyalty programme, where you earn and redeem points and build elite status. Club Marriott is a paid dining and stay discount membership in the Asia-Pacific region. Several premium Indian cards include Club Marriott, but it doesn't earn Bonvoy points.

Can I transfer HDFC or Amex points to Marriott Bonvoy?

Bank transfer partner lists change often, and ratios get revised. Check the current partner list on HDFC SmartBuy or the Amex Membership Rewards site before you earn points with a Marriott transfer in mind.

Do Marriott Bonvoy points expire?

Bonvoy points expire after a long period of account inactivity. Any earning or redemption activity resets the clock, so a co-brand card used regularly keeps your points alive.
