SBI Cashback and Amazon Pay ICICI are the two cards most Indians compare for online shopping. SBI Cashback is the stronger card for people who shop across many sites, because its 5% covers almost all online merchants, not just one. Amazon Pay ICICI is better for Prime members who do most of their shopping on Amazon, and it never charges a fee. On rewards alone, Amazon Pay ICICI only pulls ahead once your online spend goes past SBI's cap of about ₹40,000 a month and most of it is on Amazon.

How the rewards actually work

SBI Cashback

SBI Cashback pays 5% on online spends with no list of approved merchants, so Amazon, Flipkart, travel sites and food apps all qualify. That 5% is capped at ₹2,000 of cashback a month, which you reach at ₹40,000 of online spend. Offline spends earn 1%. Fuel earns nothing. Cashback is credited to your statement automatically each cycle.

Amazon Pay ICICI

Amazon Pay ICICI pays 5% on Amazon.in if you have Prime, or 3% if you don't. It pays 2% on more than 100 Amazon Pay partner merchants and 1% everywhere else. BestCard's data shows no monthly cap on these rates. Rewards arrive as Amazon Pay balance, not cash, so they are only useful if you spend on Amazon or its partners.

Worked example 1: ₹25,000 a month

Split: ₹6,000 Amazon, ₹6,000 other online, ₹13,000 offline. Assumes Prime and that the other online sites are not Amazon Pay partners.

SBI Cashback

  • Online: 5% × ₹12,000 = ₹600
  • Offline: 1% × ₹13,000 = ₹130
  • Total: ₹730 a month, ₹8,760 a year
  • ₹3 lakh a year clears the ₹2 lakh waiver, so no fee

Amazon Pay ICICI

  • Amazon: 5% × ₹6,000 = ₹300
  • Other online: 1% × ₹6,000 = ₹60
  • Offline: 1% × ₹13,000 = ₹130
  • Total: ₹490 a month, ₹5,880 a year
  • If the other online spend is at Amazon Pay partners, add ₹60, giving ₹550 a month

SBI Cashback earns about ₹2,900 more a year here.

Worked example 2: ₹60,000 a month, Amazon-heavy

Split: ₹40,000 Amazon, ₹10,000 other online, ₹10,000 offline.

SBI Cashback

  • Online: 5% × ₹50,000 = ₹2,500, capped at ₹2,000
  • Offline: 1% × ₹10,000 = ₹100
  • Total: ₹2,100 a month, ₹25,200 a year

Amazon Pay ICICI

  • Amazon: 5% × ₹40,000 = ₹2,000
  • Other online: 1% × ₹10,000 = ₹100
  • Offline: 1% × ₹10,000 = ₹100
  • Total: ₹2,200 a month, ₹26,400 a year

Amazon Pay ICICI wins by ₹1,200 a year because SBI's ₹2,000 cap limits it. Remember the ICICI figure assumes you pay for Prime. Without Prime the Amazon rate drops to 3%, which would be ₹1,200 a month on that ₹40,000.

Lounge access and travel

Neither card offers lounge access. For foreign spends, Amazon Pay ICICI's 1.99% markup is much better than SBI Cashback's 3.5%; on ₹50,000 of foreign spend, that is about ₹755 saved before GST. If you travel often, compare our low forex markup cards.

Redemption: cash vs Amazon Pay balance

SBI Cashback reduces your card bill directly, so the money can be used for anything. Amazon Pay ICICI pays into your Amazon Pay balance, which is easy to use if you already shop on Amazon but is not real cash. Neither has a redemption fee or anything to claim. Read cashback vs reward points for how to value each type.

Fees and waivers

Amazon Pay ICICI is free for life, so it is the safe card to keep even when your spending is low. SBI Cashback costs ₹999 a year unless you spend ₹2 lakh, about ₹16,700 a month. Below that, take the fee off its earnings before comparing. The income bar is slightly lower on SBI Cashback at ₹25,000 a month against ₹30,000.

Who should pick which

Choose SBI Cashback if:

  • Your online spend is spread across Flipkart, Myntra, travel and food apps
  • You spend at least ₹2 lakh a year to waive the fee
  • You want cashback as statement credit, not store balance
  • You don't have Amazon Prime

Choose Amazon Pay ICICI if:

  • Most of your online spend is on Amazon and you have Prime
  • You want a lifetime free card with no spend target
  • You make some foreign currency payments
  • You use Amazon Pay partner merchants

Verdict

For most online shoppers, SBI Cashback earns more because its 5% isn't tied to one store. Amazon Pay ICICI is the better card for Prime members who spend heavily on Amazon, and it costs nothing to keep. Many people hold both: Amazon Pay ICICI for Amazon, SBI Cashback for everything else online up to its ₹2,000 cap.
