SBI Elite vs ICICI Sapphiro: Which Premium Card Wins in 2026?
25 September 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

SBI Elite suits people who spend a lot on dining and groceries and want lounge visits without spend conditions. ICICI Sapphiro suits people who spend ₹6 lakh or more a year across categories, because its milestone points and lower fee-waiver bar do most of the work. Both cost about ₹5,000 to hold, but they earn their fee back in very different ways.

Rewards maths
Both cards value points at 25 paise. SBI Elite's 2.5% on dining and groceries is 10 points per ₹100. Everything else on both cards earns 0.5%, or 2 points per ₹100.
Example 1: ₹40,000 a month (₹4.8 lakh a year)
Assume ₹12,000 on dining and groceries and ₹28,000 on other spends.
SBI Elite
- Dining and groceries: ₹12,000 × 2.5% = ₹300
- Other: ₹28,000 × 0.5% = ₹140
- ₹440 a month, or ₹5,280 a year
- Fee not waived (₹4.8 lakh is under ₹10 lakh). Net of the ₹4,999 fee: about ₹281
ICICI Sapphiro
- All spends: ₹40,000 × 0.5% = ₹200 a month, or ₹2,400 a year
- Milestone: 4,000 points at ₹4 lakh = ₹1,000 (₹4.8 lakh doesn't reach the next ₹1 lakh step)
- Total ₹3,400 a year
- Fee not waived (under ₹6 lakh). Net of the ₹3,500 fee: about –₹100
At this level neither card really pays for itself on rewards alone. Elite edges ahead because of its dining and grocery rate.
Example 2: ₹80,000 a month (₹9.6 lakh a year)
Assume ₹25,000 on dining and groceries and ₹55,000 on other spends.
SBI Elite
- Dining and groceries: ₹25,000 × 2.5% = ₹625 (2,500 points, well under the 10,000 monthly cap)
- Other: ₹55,000 × 0.5% = ₹275
- ₹900 a month, or ₹10,800 a year
- ₹9.6 lakh falls just short of the ₹10 lakh waiver. Net of the fee: about ₹5,801
ICICI Sapphiro
- All spends: ₹80,000 × 0.5% = ₹400 a month, or ₹4,800 a year
- Milestones: 4,000 points at ₹4 lakh + 2,000 for each extra ₹1 lakh up to ₹9 lakh (5 × 2,000) = 14,000 points = ₹3,500
- Total ₹8,300 a year
- Fee waived (above ₹6 lakh). Net: ₹8,300
At higher spend, Sapphiro wins because its fee disappears and the milestones add up. If your dining and grocery share were much higher, say ₹50,000 a month, Elite would win again. Run your own split before you decide.
Utility payments on Sapphiro earn only 0.25%, so put big bill payments on a different card.

Lounge access and travel
SBI Elite is the simpler card for travellers. You get 8 domestic and 6 international visits a year, the international ones through a complimentary Priority Pass (max 2 a quarter). BookMyShow buy-one-get-one adds value if you watch films often.
ICICI Sapphiro looks generous with 4 domestic visits a quarter, but only if you spent ₹75,000 in the previous quarter. International access is 2 visits a year. Its extras are golf (tied to ₹50,000 monthly spend), a ₹3 crore air accident cover and a 24/7 concierge. Our explainer on quarterly spend triggers covers how these conditions catch people out.
For spending abroad, Elite's 2% forex markup clearly beats Sapphiro's 3.5%. On ₹2 lakh of foreign spending that's ₹4,000 against ₹7,000.
Fees and waivers
- First year: Elite's ₹4,999 joining fee comes with a ₹5,000 voucher, so it roughly pays for itself. Sapphiro's ₹6,500 joining fee comes with vouchers worth over ₹13,000, which is a better first-year deal if you'd use those brands (Tata CLiQ, EaseMyTrip, Croma and others).
- Renewal: Sapphiro's ₹3,500 renewal fee and ₹6 lakh waiver bar are much easier to clear than Elite's ₹4,999 and ₹10 lakh.
Who should pick which
Pick SBI Elite if:
- dining and groceries make up a large part of your monthly spending,
- you want lounge visits without quarterly spend targets,
- you spend abroad and care about forex,
- your income is in the ₹60,000 to ₹75,000 range (Sapphiro asks for ₹75,000).
Pick ICICI Sapphiro if:
- you spend ₹6 lakh or more a year across varied categories,
- you'll use the welcome vouchers,
- golf, concierge or the air accident cover matter to you,
- you spend mostly in India.
