If you book a lot of train tickets on IRCTC, IRCTC SBI Card Premier returns more: 10% value back on IRCTC bookings against HDFC's 5%. HDFC IRCTC costs ₹1,000 less a year, waives its fee at a lower spend and removes IRCTC's transaction charge, so it's the better pick for occasional rail travellers. Both include 8 railway lounge visits a year.

How each card rewards IRCTC bookings

IRCTC SBI Card Premier gives 10% effective value back as reward points on train tickets booked through the IRCTC website or app. Points are worth ₹1 each in our data. It also earns 2.4% on dining and 0.8% on other spends. BestCard's data shows no monthly cap on the 10%, but SBI often sets limits, so read the current terms.

HDFC IRCTC earns 5% back on train bookings, made up of SmartBuy cashback on IRCTC tickets, capped at ₹1,000 a month. It also waives the 1% IRCTC transaction charge, which most other cards don't. Other spends earn 1%.

Rewards maths

Moderate rail user: ₹5,000 a month on IRCTC, ₹15,000 on other spends

Assume ₹3,000 of the other spends is dining.

SBI Premier

  • IRCTC: ₹5,000 × 10% = ₹500
  • Dining: ₹3,000 × 2.4% = ₹72
  • Other: ₹12,000 × 0.8% = ₹96
  • ₹668 a month, or ₹8,016 a year
  • Annual spend ₹2.4 lakh, so the ₹2 lakh waiver is met and you pay no fee

HDFC IRCTC

  • IRCTC: ₹5,000 × 5% = ₹250 (well within the ₹1,000 cap)
  • Other: ₹15,000 × 1% = ₹150
  • Transaction charge saved: about ₹50 (1% of ₹5,000)
  • About ₹450 a month, or ₹5,400 a year
  • Annual spend ₹2.4 lakh, so the waiver is met

SBI Premier leads by about ₹2,600 a year once both fees are waived.

Light user: ₹1,500 a month on IRCTC, ₹8,000 on other spends

SBI Premier: ₹150 + (₹8,000 × 0.8% = ₹64) = ₹214 a month, or ₹2,568 a year. Annual spend is ₹1.14 lakh, below the ₹2 lakh waiver, so subtract ₹1,499 + GST (₹1,769). Net about ₹800.

HDFC IRCTC: ₹75 + ₹80 + ₹15 transaction charge saved = ₹170 a month, or ₹2,040 a year. Below the ₹1.5 lakh waiver, so subtract ₹500 + GST (₹590). Net about ₹1,450.

For light users, HDFC comes out ahead because its fee is low enough not to eat the rewards.

Heavy user: ₹15,000 a month on IRCTC

SBI Premier earns ₹1,500 a month on tickets. HDFC earns ₹750, still under its ₹1,000 cap. The cap only starts to bite above ₹20,000 a month of IRCTC spend. At this level SBI Premier earns roughly double on tickets.

Railway lounges and other benefits

Both cards give 8 complimentary railway lounge visits a year. SBI Premier's data names stations such as New Delhi, Agra, Ahmedabad and Jaipur. HDFC lists IRCTC executive lounges at participating stations. Our railway lounge access guide explains how to use these.

Neither card offers airport lounges. If you also fly, you'll want a second card. See best domestic lounge cards.

HDFC adds a fuel surcharge waiver (1% on ₹400–₹1,00,000, capped at ₹250 per cycle) and a ₹500 Amazon voucher when you activate the card and transact within 30 days. SBI Premier gives 1,500 bonus points on joining.

Fees and waivers

HDFC IRCTC is cheaper on every count: ₹500 against ₹1,499, waived at ₹1.5 lakh against ₹2 lakh. If you won't reach ₹2 lakh a year on the card, SBI Premier's fee takes a real bite out of what it earns, as the light-user example shows.

Network: RuPay vs Visa

HDFC IRCTC is a RuPay card, so you can link it to UPI apps for credit card UPI payments, subject to HDFC's reward rules on UPI spends. That's handy for small everyday payments. SBI Premier runs on Visa, which is accepted more widely abroad, though its 3.5% markup makes it a poor foreign-spend card either way.

Who should pick which

Choose IRCTC SBI Card Premier if:

  • You spend ₹3,000 or more a month on IRCTC tickets.
  • You can put ₹2 lakh a year through the card to waive the fee.
  • You also eat out and want the 2.4% dining rate.

  • You want the IRCTC transaction charge waived.
  • You'd like a RuPay card for UPI payments.

Verdict

For frequent rail travellers, IRCTC SBI Card Premier is the better card. Double the reward rate on tickets and a dining bonus easily cover its higher fee once you clear ₹2 lakh a year. For occasional travellers, HDFC IRCTC is the sensible choice: a ₹500 fee, a lower waiver and the transaction charge waiver mean it pays off even on light use.
