Axis Magnus vs ICICI Emeralde Private Metal 2026: Which Super-Premium Card Wins?
19 October 2026 · BestCard Editorial Team

Axis Magnus and ICICI Emeralde Private Metal cost almost exactly the same, about ₹12,500 a year, but they suit different people. Magnus only wins for people who spend ₹25 lakh or more a year, book a meaningful share of it as travel through Travel EDGE and transfer points to airline and hotel partners; on everyday spend its 2.4% base trails ICICI's 3% even at transfer value. Emeralde Private Metal wins for most other people: those who want a simple 3% return, an easy ₹10 lakh fee waiver, a lower 1.5% forex markup and lounge access for the whole family. Your travel spend and redemption habits decide this one.

How the rewards actually work
Axis Magnus
Axis Magnus earns 12 Edge Reward points per ₹200. Points transfer to airline and hotel partners at 5:2, so at ₹1 a mile BestCard values that at a 2.4% base rate and 12% on travel. At the listed 20 paise a point, the same 12 points per ₹200 is only 1.2%, and travel drops to about 6%. Statement credit and cash-style redemptions are worth less still. So Magnus is two different cards depending on whether you transfer.
ICICI Emeralde Private Metal
ICICI Emeralde Private Metal earns a flat 3% on general spend, with points valued at ₹1 each in our data when redeemed for travel. Utilities earn just 1%. There's no accelerated travel category, so a flight earns the same as a dinner. Redemption as statement credit or ICICI catalogue vouchers is free, while select third-party catalogue items cost ₹99 plus GST per request.
Worked example 1: ₹1 lakh a month
Split: ₹85,000 general spend, ₹15,000 travel. Annual spend ₹12 lakh.
Axis Magnus (transfer value)
- General: 2.4% × ₹85,000 = ₹2,040
- Travel: 12% × ₹15,000 = ₹1,800
- Total ₹3,840 a month, ₹46,080 a year
- ₹12 lakh is below the ₹25 lakh waiver, so subtract the ₹12,500 fee
- Net: ₹33,580 a year
Axis Magnus (20 paise a point)
- General: 1.2% × ₹85,000 = ₹1,020
- Travel: 6% × ₹15,000 = ₹900
- Total ₹1,920 a month, ₹23,040 a year, minus ₹12,500
- Net: ₹10,540 a year
ICICI Emeralde Private Metal
- All spend: 3% × ₹1,00,000 = ₹3,000 a month, ₹36,000 a year
- ₹12 lakh clears the ₹10 lakh waiver, so no fee
- Net: ₹36,000 a year
At this spend, Emeralde Private Metal wins either way: by about ₹2,400 even if you transfer every Magnus point, and by about ₹25,000 if you don't.

Worked example 2: ₹2.5 lakh a month
Split: ₹2,10,000 general spend, ₹40,000 travel. Annual spend ₹30 lakh.
Axis Magnus (transfer value)
- General: 2.4% × ₹2,10,000 = ₹5,040
- Travel: 12% × ₹40,000 = ₹4,800
- Total ₹9,840 a month
- ₹1,18,080 a year, fee waived at ₹30 lakh
Axis Magnus (20 paise a point)
- General: 1.2% × ₹2,10,000 = ₹2,520
- Travel: 6% × ₹40,000 = ₹2,400
- ₹4,920 a month, ₹59,040 a year, fee waived
ICICI Emeralde Private Metal
- All spend: 3% × ₹2,50,000 = ₹7,500 a month
- ₹90,000 a year, fee waived
At high spend, Magnus pulls ahead for a transfer user by about ₹28,000 a year, and almost all of that lead comes from the 12% travel rate; on the ₹2,10,000 of general spend, ICICI's 3% still beats Magnus's 2.4%. For someone who redeems at listed value, Emeralde Private Metal earns about ₹31,000 more.
Lounge access and travel
Both cards give the primary cardholder unlimited domestic and international lounge visits. The difference is family. Emeralde Private Metal extends unlimited access to add-on cardholders, while Magnus gives 4 Priority Pass guest visits a year. From 28 August 2026, Priority Pass on Magnus works only at international lounges, and domestic lounges in India are accessed by showing the Magnus card with a boarding pass.
Forex favours ICICI. On ₹5 lakh of foreign spend a year, Emeralde Private Metal's 1.5% markup costs ₹7,500 against ₹10,000 on Magnus at 2%. Golf also leans ICICI, with unlimited monthly rounds against complimentary games at select courses on Magnus. Magnus carries the bigger air accident cover at up to ₹4 crore. Redemption: transfers vs flat points
Magnus asks more of you. To get even the 2.4% base and 12% on travel you need to choose a transfer partner, find award seats or hotel nights, and accept that partner ratios can change. If you have not done this before, read our guide to transferring card points to airline miles first. Emeralde Private Metal is simpler: points are valued at ₹1 for travel redemptions in our data, and statement credit is free to redeem, though it may return less than travel.
Fees and waivers
The fees are the same within a rupee, and both welcome benefits roughly cover year one: a ₹12,500 voucher on Magnus, 12,500 points plus two dining memberships on Emeralde Private Metal. From year two, the waiver matters. Emeralde Private Metal is free once you spend ₹10 lakh a year, about ₹83,000 a month. Magnus needs ₹25 lakh, about ₹2.08 lakh a month. Between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh of annual spend, you pay Magnus's fee and nothing on ICICI.
Eligibility is the other filter. Magnus is open to direct applications with a ₹2 lakh monthly income bar. Emeralde Private Metal is invite-only at ₹2.5 lakh a month.
Who should pick which
Choose Axis Magnus if:
- You spend ₹25 lakh or more a year, so the fee is waived
- You are comfortable transferring points to airline and hotel partners
- A good part of your spend is travel booked through Travel EDGE, where the 12% rate applies; without it, Magnus's 2.4% base loses to ICICI's 3%
- You can't get an ICICI invitation
Choose ICICI Emeralde Private Metal if:
- You want a flat 3% without managing transfers
- Your annual spend sits between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh
- Add-on cardholders in your family travel with you
- You spend regularly abroad and want the 1.5% markup
Verdict
For a high spender who books plenty of travel through Travel EDGE and transfers points, Axis Magnus is the stronger rewards card past ₹25 lakh a year, because of its 12% travel rate rather than its 2.4% base. For everyone else, including people who transfer but spend mostly on non-travel categories and most people who redeem points as statement credit, ICICI Emeralde Private Metal returns more money with less work, waives its fee sooner and covers the family in lounges. If you have the invite and don't want to learn transfer partners, take the ICICI card.
