HDFC Infinia beats Axis Reserve on almost every number that can be measured: a 3.33% base reward rate against 1.5%, a ₹12,500 fee against ₹50,000, and a waiver at ₹10 lakh of spend instead of ₹35 lakh. Axis Reserve's case rests on what's harder to measure: Club ITC Culinaire, Accorplus and Club Marriott memberships, 50 golf rounds a year and a 1.5% forex markup. For most people who can get either, Infinia is the better card. Reserve makes sense as a lifestyle card for someone who'll actually use its memberships.

Rewards maths

The headline difference is simple: Infinia earns more than twice as much per rupee on regular spending. Here's what that means in rupees.

At ₹2 lakh a month (₹24 lakh a year)

  • Axis Reserve: 1.5% × ₹2,00,000 = ₹3,000 a month, or ₹36,000 a year. You haven't reached the ₹35 lakh waiver, so the ₹50,000 fee (₹59,000 with GST) applies. Net: about ₹23,000 in the red before benefits.
  • HDFC Infinia: 3.33% × ₹2,00,000 = ₹6,660 a month, or ₹79,920 a year. You've cleared the ₹10 lakh waiver, so no renewal fee. Net: ₹79,920 ahead.

At ₹4 lakh a month (₹48 lakh a year)

  • Axis Reserve: 1.5% × ₹4,00,000 = ₹6,000 a month, or ₹72,000 a year, and the fee is waived because you've crossed ₹35 lakh.
  • HDFC Infinia: 3.33% × ₹4,00,000 = ₹13,320 a month, or ₹1,59,840 a year, fee waived.

Even at a spend level where Reserve finally becomes free, Infinia earns about ₹87,800 more a year.

SmartBuy pushes Infinia further

Infinia's travel rate of up to 16.65% applies to hotel and flight bookings made through HDFC's SmartBuy portal, subject to a monthly cap that BestCard's data doesn't specify. If you put ₹20,000 a month of hotel bookings through SmartBuy and stay under the cap, that's ₹3,330 a month on those bookings alone, against ₹300 on Reserve. Our explainer on SmartBuy and EDGE reward portals covers how these work.

International spending

Take ₹3 lakh of spending abroad:

  • Axis Reserve: markup 1.5% = ₹4,500, plus 18% GST = ₹5,310. Rewards at 1.5% = ₹4,500. Net cost: ₹810.
  • HDFC Infinia: markup 2% = ₹6,000, plus GST = ₹7,080. Rewards at 3.33% = ₹9,990. Net gain: ₹2,910.

Reserve's lower markup doesn't make up for its lower reward rate.

Lounges and travel

Lounge access is close to a tie. Both cards give unlimited domestic and international lounge visits. Reserve's data mentions guests on domestic visits, while Infinia extends domestic lounge access to add-on cardholders, which suits families who each carry a card. Check current guest rules with each bank before you travel in a group. Our roundup of cards with truly unlimited lounge access puts both in context.

Where Reserve pulls ahead is the hotel and dining memberships. Club ITC Culinaire, Accorplus and Club Marriott Asia Pacific together can be worth a lot to someone who dines at ITC and Accor properties and stays at Marriott hotels in the region. Reserve also includes a dedicated Travel EDGE concierge and charges no cash withdrawal fee, which is unusual. Infinia includes Club Marriott for the first year only.

On golf, Infinia's unlimited games and lessons beat Reserve's 50 a year on paper, though few people play more than 50 rounds annually.

Fees and waivers

This is where the gap is widest. Reserve costs ₹59,000 a year with GST unless you spend ₹35 lakh, about ₹2.9 lakh a month. Infinia costs ₹14,750 with GST, waived at ₹10 lakh, about ₹83,000 a month. Infinia's 12,500 welcome points, worth ₹12,500 at our data's point value, effectively refund the first-year fee.

Who should pick which

Pick HDFC Infinia if:

  • You want the best reward return per rupee spent
  • You book travel and hotels and can route them through SmartBuy
  • You spend ₹10 lakh or more a year but not necessarily ₹35 lakh
  • You can meet the ₹5 lakh monthly income bar or get an invitation from HDFC

Pick Axis Reserve if:

  • You spend well above ₹35 lakh a year, so the fee is waived
  • You'll genuinely use Club ITC Culinaire, Accorplus and Club Marriott memberships
  • You value a dedicated concierge and nil cash withdrawal fees
  • You already bank with Axis and the card comes as part of that relationship

Many high spenders hold both: Infinia for everyday earning and Reserve for the memberships. That only makes sense if Reserve's fee is waived.

All figures here come from BestCard's latest card data. Banks change reward rates, caps and memberships, so check both issuers' sites before applying.

Verdict

HDFC Infinia is the stronger card for almost everyone who qualifies. It earns more than twice as much per rupee, costs a quarter as much, and is free from a much lower spend level. Axis Reserve is a lifestyle card first: worth holding if your spend clears ₹35 lakh and you'll use its memberships, hard to justify otherwise.
