If your main use case for a credit card is scanning UPI QR codes instead of pulling out cash, paying an annual fee for that privilege makes little sense. A handful of RuPay cards are lifetime free — no joining fee, no renewal fee, ever — and still link into UPI apps for everyday QR payments. They won't have premium lounge access or high reward multipliers, but for pure UPI usage that's often the right trade.

Why lifetime free matters more here than usual

With a premium card, you can justify an annual fee against lounge visits, milestone benefits, or a high reward rate that offsets the cost. A card whose main job is scanning QR codes at the local shop rarely generates enough reward value to offset even a modest ₹500-1000 annual fee, especially once you account for fee waivers requiring a minimum annual spend you might not hit. For UPI-first usage, "free forever" beats "free if you spend X" — read when should you pay a credit card annual fee if you want the full reasoning on that trade-off.

What to check before applying

Not every lifetime-free card is RuPay, and not every RuPay card supports UPI linkage even if the bank issues both — confirm both facts for the specific card variant before applying, since bank websites don't always make this clear upfront. Our RuPay credit cards on UPI guide explains exactly how the linking process works and what "RuPay" actually buys you here. Also check whether the "lifetime free" label is conditional — some cards waive the fee only if you cross a minimum annual spend, which isn't really lifetime free, it's a spend-linked waiver with extra steps.

Cards worth considering

SBI Card offers several genuinely lifetime-free RuPay variants suited to UPI-first users — check the specific card page for the RuPay flag and UPI-linkage confirmation rather than assuming every SBI card qualifies. PSU banks (SBI, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank) and some private banks also issue no-frills RuPay cards aimed at first-time credit users, which tend to have straightforward lifetime-free terms without spend conditions attached — these are worth a look if you're building credit history for the first time, alongside our guide on credit cards for students in India if that applies to you.

The trade-off you're accepting

Lifetime-free UPI cards almost always come with lower credit limits, no premium rewards categories, and thin (or no) travel/lounge benefits — you're optimizing for zero cost, not maximum reward. That's a reasonable choice if UPI QR payments are your primary spend pattern and you don't travel enough to value lounge access. If you do want some reward upside on top of zero fees, compare against best UPI cashback credit cards to see which lifetime-free options also carry a real cashback rate on UPI spends rather than none at all.

One thing to watch

A card being lifetime free at issuance doesn't guarantee the bank can never introduce a fee later — read the fine print on fee-waiver policy changes, and keep an eye on your annual statement for any fee line item that shouldn't be there. If one shows up unexpectedly, redeem credit card reward points and call the issuer before the due date rather than paying a fee you weren't expecting on a card marketed as free.
