Can You Use Visa Credit Cards on UPI in India?
5 November 2025 · BestCard Editorial Team

Short answer: no. If you try to add a Visa or Mastercard credit card to GPay, PhonePe, or Paytm's UPI linking flow today, it won't show up as an option. Only RuPay-network credit cards can be linked to UPI in India, and that isn't a temporary gap — it's how the system was built.
Why RuPay and not Visa or Mastercard
UPI is run by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), and RuPay is also an NPCI-owned card network. When NPCI decided to extend UPI beyond bank accounts to allow credit card linkage, it opened that door for its own network first — RuPay credit cards got approval to link to UPI starting in 2022. Visa and Mastercard are international networks that sit outside NPCI's direct control, and no equivalent linkage has been approved for them. This isn't a technical limitation so much as a policy one: NPCI controls both UPI and RuPay, so integrating the two was a decision it could make unilaterally. Extending the same to Visa or Mastercard would require separate commercial and regulatory arrangements that haven't materialized.

What this means if your only card is Visa or Mastercard
You can still use UPI normally through a linked bank account or debit card — that part of UPI has never been network-restricted. What you lose is the specific ability to route UPI QR payments through your Visa or Mastercard credit line and earn rewards on them the way a RuPay cardholder can. If earning rewards on daily UPI spending matters to you, that's a real reason to consider adding a RuPay card alongside your existing Visa or Mastercard one, rather than switching entirely — see our RuPay UPI guide and the step-by-step linking process if you decide to go that route.
Will this change?
There's no confirmed timeline for Visa or Mastercard credit cards getting UPI linkage, and given that the restriction is structural rather than a rollout-in-progress, don't plan around it changing soon. Keep an eye on our UPI changes coverage for anything that shifts — NPCI has expanded UPI credit card rules before without much advance notice, so it's not impossible, just not something to bank on for your card strategy today.
What to actually do about it
If UPI-linked rewards are a genuine priority, get a RuPay credit card for that specific purpose and keep using your Visa or Mastercard card for everything else — most people end up carrying more than one card anyway. SBI Card issues RuPay variants worth checking, and if you're building out a two-card setup, our SBI credit cards guide and best cashback credit cards roundup are both useful starting points for picking the second card around your actual spending pattern rather than just chasing the UPI feature.
