Credit Score Factors Beyond Credit Cards in India

Most credit score advice in India understandably focuses on credit cards, since that's where a lot of people first interact with credit actively. But your CIBIL score is shaped by a wider set of financial behaviors, several of which have nothing to do with cards at all and get far less attention.
Loan EMIs carry real weight
Home loans, personal loans, auto loans, and education loans all report to credit bureaus, and consistent on-time EMI payment across these is one of the strongest positive signals in your credit history — arguably as significant as credit card payment behavior, and for people with a home loan, potentially more significant given the size and duration of the loan.
Being a loan guarantor affects your own score
If you've stood as guarantor for someone else's loan, that loan appears on your own credit report and factors into your own credit utilization and repayment history, even though you never directly borrowed the money. A guarantor whose primary borrower defaults or pays late can see real damage to their own score for a loan they never personally spent a rupee of.
Credit mix matters more than most people realize
Bureaus consider the mix of credit types you hold — a mix of secured (home, auto) and unsecured (personal loan, credit card) credit generally scores better than relying entirely on one type. This is one reason financial advisors sometimes suggest taking a small, well-managed loan isn't purely a cost — it can genuinely diversify your credit profile, though it should never be taken purely to "improve the mix" without an actual borrowing need.
Hard inquiries from any credit application, not just cards
Every time you apply for a loan or a credit card, the lender runs a hard inquiry that briefly dings your score, and multiple hard inquiries in a short window compound this effect regardless of what kind of credit you're applying for. Our credit card soft pull vs hard pull guide explains the mechanic in more depth.
Rent and utility payments generally don't count — yet
Unlike some Western credit systems, rent and utility bill payments generally aren't reported to Indian credit bureaus by default, meaning years of perfect rent payment history typically won't show up on your CIBIL report unless you're specifically using a rent-payment product that reports to bureaus. This is worth knowing so you don't assume responsible rent payment alone is building your score.
Old, closed accounts still matter for a while
Closing a long-standing loan or credit account doesn't immediately erase it from your credit history — bureaus typically retain records for a period after closure, and the length of your credit history is itself a scoring factor, which is part of why closing your oldest account is usually not a neutral decision.
