How to Build Credit History From Scratch in India (2026 Guide)

To build credit history from scratch in India, get one credit product that reports to the bureaus (a secured card against a fixed deposit is the easiest), use a small part of its limit, and pay the full bill on time every month. Do that for six to twelve months and you will have a CIBIL score that qualifies you for regular unsecured cards.

Why a thin file is a problem

Banks decide on credit cards and loans largely by looking at your credit report. If you have never borrowed, there is nothing to look at, and you show up as "NH" (no history) or "NA" instead of a score. That is not the same as a bad score, but many lenders treat it as a reason to say no. Our CIBIL score basics post explains how the number is calculated once you have data.

The fix is to create that data deliberately and cheaply.

Step 1: Pick a first credit product

You have three realistic routes.

A secured credit card (easiest)

You open a fixed deposit and the bank issues a card with a limit linked to it. No income proof or credit history is needed because the FD covers the bank's risk. The FD keeps earning interest. Options in BestCard's data include:

Card Annual fee Deposit and limit Notable extra
IDFC FIRST WOW! Lifetime free ₹20,000 FD minimum 0% forex markup
Kotak 811 #DreamDifferent Lifetime free Limit up to 90% of FD Fuel surcharge waiver
AU Bank NOMO ₹199 joining, no annual fee ₹10,000 FD, limit up to 100% Lounge visits on ₹20,000 quarterly spend
HDFC Credit Card Against FD Lifetime free ₹15,000 FD, 1-year tenure Big-bank issuer
ICICI Instant Platinum Lifetime free FD-secured No income proof needed

For a deeper look at how these work, see secured credit cards against an FD.

An entry-level unsecured card

If you have a salary, some banks will issue a basic card without a credit history. The Kotak 811 card, for example, lists ₹15,000 monthly income, a ₹500 annual fee and a ₹50,000 spend waiver. HDFC Pixel Go lists ₹12,000 monthly income and a ₹250 fee waived at ₹50,000. Approval is not guaranteed without history, so if you get rejected, go secured rather than applying everywhere.

An add-on card (doesn't count)

Being an add-on cardholder on a parent's card usually doesn't build your own credit file, because the account and its repayment record belong to the primary holder. Use it for convenience, not credit building.

Step 2: Use the card lightly

Utilisation, the share of your limit you use, matters a lot. Keep your statement balance under roughly 30% of the limit.

Example: you open a ₹20,000 FD with Kotak and get a limit of 90%, so ₹18,000. Thirty per cent of that is ₹5,400. Put a phone bill, an OTT subscription and some groceries on it, around ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 a month, and stop there.

If you need to spend more, pay part of the bill before the statement date so the reported balance stays low. Our utilisation ratio explainer shows the maths in more detail.

Step 3: Pay in full, every time

Payment history is the single biggest factor in your score. Set up autopay for the total amount due, not the minimum. Paying only the minimum keeps you "current" but triggers interest on the full balance; the minimum due trap explains why that gets expensive fast.

One missed payment reported as 30 days past due can stay on your report for years. With a small limit and autopay, there is no reason to ever miss one.

Step 4: Wait, and don't stack applications

Banks report to bureaus monthly. A score usually appears after about six months of activity. During this period:

  • Don't apply for several cards at once. Each application is a hard enquiry, and a cluster of them looks like credit hunger. See soft pull vs hard pull.
  • Check your report once you think a score exists, using a free source. Our free CIBIL check guide lists the legitimate ones.
  • Fix any errors (wrong name, a loan you don't recognise) by raising a dispute with the bureau.

Step 5: Graduate to an unsecured card

After 6 to 12 months of clean history, you can usually apply for a regular card. Good options are often with the bank that issued your secured card, since it has seen your repayment behaviour. Keep the secured card open if it is lifetime free: closing your oldest account shortens your credit age.

Once your FD-backed card has served its purpose, you can ask the bank to convert it to unsecured or release the lien when you close it.

Common mistakes

  • Maxing the limit. Spending ₹17,000 on an ₹18,000 limit and paying in full still reports 94% utilisation if the statement generates first.
  • Paying the minimum. It avoids a late mark but costs interest and keeps balances high.
  • Applying to five banks in a month. Rejections plus enquiries push approval further away.
  • Breaking the FD. On a secured card, the FD must stay intact for the card to remain active.
  • Ignoring the statement date. Utilisation is measured on what is reported, which is usually your statement balance. Learn your cycle with our billing date vs due date guide.

A realistic timeline

Month What to do What you'll see
0 Open FD, get secured card, set autopay No score yet
1–6 Spend ₹3,000–₹5,000 a month, pay in full First reports appear
6–9 Check your free report for errors Initial score generated
12 Apply for one unsecured card Better approval odds

Card details in this guide reflect BestCard's latest data, but FD minimums and fees change, so confirm them on the issuer's site before you apply.

Bottom line

You don't need a loan, a salary slip or luck to build a credit history. A lifetime-free secured card, a small monthly spend and autopay for the full amount will get you a usable score within a year. When you're ready for your first unsecured card, the BestCard matcher can shortlist ones that fit your income and spending.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build a CIBIL score from scratch?

A score is generally generated once you have around six months of reported credit activity. Building a strong score of 750 or above usually takes a year or more of on-time payments and low utilisation.

Can I get a credit card with no credit history in India?

Yes. A secured credit card issued against a fixed deposit needs no credit history or income proof, because the FD covers the bank's risk. Some issuers also offer entry-level unsecured cards with low income requirements.

Does a secured credit card build credit the same way as a regular card?

Yes. Secured cards are reported to credit bureaus like any other credit card, so on-time payments and low utilisation build your score in the same way.

Should I take a small loan just to build credit?

There's no need. A credit card used lightly and paid in full each month builds history without interest costs. Taking a loan you don't need adds cost and risk.
