HDFC Diners Club Black Metal earns more, especially if you dine out and spend ₹4 lakh or more a quarter. ICICI Emeralde Private Metal is the easier card to use: Visa acceptance, a lower 1.5% forex markup and unlimited golf. Both charge a fee of around ₹10,000–12,500, ask for ₹2.5 lakh monthly income, and give unlimited lounge access to primary and add-on cardholders.

Rewards maths

Both cards value points at ₹1 in BestCard's data. On HDFC that value usually comes through SmartBuy and air miles transfers. ICICI redemptions depend on its catalogue and partners.

HDFC Diners Club Black earns 3.33% base. Dining earns 16.65%, which matches the 5X points on Swiggy and Zomato. That rate has a monthly cap, so check HDFC's current limit. Every calendar quarter you spend ₹4 lakh, you get 10,000 bonus points.

ICICI Emeralde Private Metal earns a flat 3% base, dropping to 1% on utilities. On joining it gives 12,500 reward points, plus Taj Epicure Plus and EazyDiner Prime memberships, which roughly cover the first-year fee.

Example 1: ₹1 lakh a month

Assume ₹10,000 on Swiggy/Zomato dining and ₹5,000 on utilities.

Diners Club Black

  • ₹10,000 × 16.65% = ₹1,665 (assuming it stays within the monthly cap)
  • ₹90,000 × 3.33% = ₹2,997
  • ₹4,662 a month, or ₹55,944 a year. Quarterly spend of ₹3 lakh misses the ₹4 lakh milestone.

Emeralde Private Metal

  • ₹5,000 × 1% = ₹50
  • ₹95,000 × 3% = ₹2,850
  • ₹2,900 a month, or ₹34,800 a year

Annual spend of ₹12 lakh clears both fee waivers. Diners Club Black leads by about ₹21,000.

Example 2: ₹1.5 lakh a month

Same ₹10,000 dining and ₹5,000 utilities.

Diners Club Black

  • ₹1,665 + (₹1,40,000 × 3.33% = ₹4,662) = ₹6,327 a month, or ₹75,924 a year
  • Quarterly spend of ₹4.5 lakh earns the milestone: 4 × 10,000 points = ₹40,000
  • About ₹1,15,924 a year

Emeralde Private Metal

  • ₹50 + (₹1,45,000 × 3% = ₹4,350) = ₹4,400 a month
  • ₹52,800 a year

At this level Diners Club Black earns more than twice as much, mostly because of the quarterly milestone. One caveat applies: you can only earn it if your ₹1.5 lakh actually goes through on Diners Club. If merchants decline it and you end up paying with another card, the milestone slips away.

Lounge, golf and travel

On lounges, the two cards are about equal. Both give unlimited domestic and international access to primary and add-on cardholders. Diners Club Black lists 1,300+ lounges through its own network and Priority Pass.

Golf favours ICICI: unlimited rounds every month against Diners Club Black's 6 games or lessons a quarter. That's still plenty for most people.

Travel protection. Emeralde Private Metal carries ₹3 crore air accident cover on tickets bought with the card and a 24/7 concierge. Diners Club Black includes standard super-premium insurance according to HDFC's terms.

Forex. On a ₹3 lakh foreign trip, Emeralde Private Metal's 1.5% markup costs ₹4,500 plus GST; Diners Club Black's 2% costs ₹6,000 plus GST. Add Visa's wider acceptance abroad and ICICI is the better card to use on international trips.

Memberships and perks

Diners Club Black unlocks Club Marriott, Amazon Prime and Swiggy One once you spend ₹1.5 lakh within 90 days of issuance, and offers up to 25% off at partner restaurants. Emeralde Private Metal gives Taj Epicure Plus and EazyDiner Prime on joining, with no spend condition.

Fees and access

Diners Club Black is cheaper (₹10,000 against ₹12,499) and easier to waive (₹8 lakh against ₹10 lakh). The bigger difference is access. Emeralde Private Metal is invite-only, available through ICICI Wealth Management or a relationship manager. If you don't have that relationship, it isn't really an option.

Acceptance: the trade-off with Diners

Diners Club acceptance in India is weaker than Visa's, especially at smaller merchants, outside metros and at some overseas shops. Most Diners Club Black holders carry a Visa or Mastercard as backup. If you want one card for everything, Emeralde Private Metal is the safer choice. Our Diners Club cards guide explains more.
