How the rewards actually work
HDFC Infinia
HDFC Infinia earns about 3.33% on regular spends in BestCard's data, when points are redeemed at ₹1 each for flights and hotels on SmartBuy. Bookings through SmartBuy earn more: up to 10X on hotels and 5X on flights, subject to a monthly cap. BestCard's data puts SmartBuy travel at 16.65%. The 12,500-point welcome bonus effectively refunds the joining fee, and the first year also includes Club Marriott membership.
HDFC Diners Club Black
HDFC Diners Club Black earns the same 3.33% base, with 5X on Swiggy and Zomato (16.65%, capped monthly) and up to 25% off at partner restaurants. Its biggest earner is the milestone: 10,000 bonus points every calendar quarter in which you spend ₹4 lakh. Spend ₹1.5 lakh in the first 90 days and you also get Club Marriott, Amazon Prime and Swiggy One memberships. BestCard's data doesn't list a SmartBuy multiplier for this card, so we treat its travel spend at the base rate below.
Worked example 1: ₹1,00,000 a month
Split: ₹8,000 Swiggy and Zomato, ₹92,000 other.
HDFC Infinia
- All spend: 3.33% × ₹1,00,000 = ₹3,330
- Total: ₹3,330 a month, ₹39,960 a year, plus 12,500 welcome points in year one
HDFC Diners Club Black
- Swiggy and Zomato: 16.65% × ₹8,000 = ₹1,332
- Other: 3.33% × ₹92,000 = ₹3,064
- Total: ₹4,396 a month, about ₹52,750 a year
Quarterly spend is ₹3 lakh, short of the ₹4 lakh milestone. Annual spend of ₹12 lakh waives both fees. Diners Club Black earns about ₹12,800 more in a normal year, assuming the Swiggy and Zomato spend stays within HDFC's monthly cap and every merchant accepts Diners.

Worked example 2: ₹1,50,000 a month with travel
Split: ₹20,000 SmartBuy flights and hotels, ₹8,000 Swiggy and Zomato, ₹1,22,000 other.
HDFC Infinia
- SmartBuy travel: 16.65% × ₹20,000 = ₹3,330
- Everything else: 3.33% × ₹1,30,000 = ₹4,329
- Total: ₹7,659 a month, about ₹91,900 a year
HDFC Diners Club Black
- SmartBuy travel at base: 3.33% × ₹20,000 = ₹666
- Swiggy and Zomato: 16.65% × ₹8,000 = ₹1,332
- Other: 3.33% × ₹1,22,000 = ₹4,063
- Points: ₹6,061 a month, about ₹72,730 a year
- Quarterly spend ₹4.5 lakh: 4 × 10,000 = 40,000 points, ₹40,000
- Total: about ₹1,12,700 a year
Even with ₹20,000 a month of SmartBuy bookings, Diners Club Black stays ahead because of its milestone points. Infinia catches up only if your SmartBuy spend is much higher, or if your hotel bookings earn the full 10X within HDFC's cap.
Lounge access and travel
Lounges are close to a tie. Both cards give unlimited domestic and international access for primary and add-on cardholders. Infinia lists 1,000+ international lounges through Priority Pass and Diners Club Black lists 1,300+. Both charge 2% forex markup. The real travel difference is acceptance. Diners Club is accepted at fewer merchants than Visa in India, especially outside metros, and abroad. Our guide to network-level lounge perks covers how Visa and Diners differ.
Golf favours Infinia: unlimited games and lessons against 6 a quarter on Diners Club Black.
Redemption
Both cards share HDFC's Reward Points system, worth ₹1 a point on SmartBuy flights and hotels. Statement credit and catalogue redemptions are worth less, and a nominal fee applies to catalogue redemptions. To get the full 3.33%, plan to redeem for travel through SmartBuy on either card.
Fees and waivers
Diners Club Black is ₹2,500 cheaper and its waiver arrives sooner, at ₹8 lakh of annual spend against ₹10 lakh for Infinia. Between ₹8 and ₹10 lakh, you'd pay ₹12,500 for Infinia and nothing for Diners. Infinia's 12,500 welcome points offset its first-year fee. Eligibility is the bigger divide: Infinia asks for ₹5 lakh a month and is mostly by invitation, while Diners Club Black asks for ₹2.5 lakh, and the metal edition is the version HDFC currently issues.
Who should pick which
Choose HDFC Infinia if:
- You book a lot of hotels and flights through SmartBuy
- You need a card accepted almost everywhere, in India and abroad
- You play golf often
- You've been invited or meet the ₹5 lakh income bar
Choose HDFC Diners Club Black if:
- You can spend ₹4 lakh in most quarters to collect the milestone
- You order on Swiggy and Zomato regularly
- Your income is between ₹2.5 and ₹5 lakh a month
- You can keep a Visa or Mastercard as backup for merchants that don't take Diners
Verdict
On BestCard's numbers, HDFC Diners Club Black earns more than Infinia for most high spenders, costs less and is easier to get, as long as you can live with Diners acceptance. Infinia is the better pick for heavy SmartBuy travel bookers, golfers and anyone who wants one super-premium card that works everywhere. Many Infinia holders keep Diners Club Black too, using it for the quarterly milestone and Swiggy and Zomato.
